Hey all, I really want to become a army heilcopter pilot. So people say to join the reserves then go to college, then try to become a pilot. Does anyone know any better ways? And post any info you want about becomeing a pilot or heilcopters

Last time I checked, you could fly a helicopter in the Army as a Warrant Officer. Look into that as it'd be your path of least resistance.

You realize you can learn to fly a helicopter (not heilcopter), without joining the military. I'm not suggesting that joining the military is bad, but you have options.
You could always take a lesson or two to be sure it's something you want to do as a vocation before making a decision.

Join the Army...that might be a good start.

Honestly you need to get a super good score on your ASVAB first before you can even think about something like that.

Anyone could get a good score on that test. It's genuinely written to weed out the people that mouth-breathers think are dumb.

F that reserve crap. Those guys get deployed almost as much as active duty and get far fewer benefits. If you're going to experiment with green weenie penetration, let it run up to the hilt and at least get a reach around out of it. And don't settle for anything less than

Yeah, Don't believe anything the recruiter tells you. If it isn't on paper, it won't happen. Their job is to get you to sign paperwork. They'll tell you just about anything to get you to join. Thoroughly research everything before you make a decision.

And is it true that if you sign up for something they can put you in a totally different area, for example, some one signs up to be a chief but they put him in infantry.

So what should I do? Go to community collage they join the army? Or try to sign up for the "high school to flight school" program, even tho I probably wont get excepted?

Go to college first. Hell, you could even become a commissioned officer after a 4 year degree in music and be making good money doing whatever.

And yes, the Army will put you wherever they need you. The Navy is THE ONLY BRANCH that can guarantee your job BEFORE you sign the paperwork joining. My best friend back home joined the Army under an Engineer contract. Graduating Basic Training, they told him he wasn't going to be an engineer anymore, but instead was gonna be combat escort for fuel trucks.

I wouldn't be surprised that there's a clause in your contract that if you don't meet selection criteria that you can be "reassigned in the best interest of the service" or equally vague and imposing language.

If the only interest you have in the Army is for flight school why you try despite "even tho I probably wont get excepted" (it's 'accepted', not 'excepted') you should pass on the whole idea. Say you don't make it, you end up serving for who knows how long in a job you might or might not like and the Army gets someone that potentially doesn't care about what they're doing...not exactly what they're looking for.

If I'm in your place, my first step would be to find out exactly what the flight physical consists of and make sure that you're going to pass that. That will be your biggest disqualifier. And take the ASVAB (if you haven't already), you get high enough scores and you never who will come knocking and what other slick jobs you'll get offered.

I gots to disagree. While it might be sweet to be flying the Apache at first, I think the coolest gig (flying Army helos) would be behind the stick of an MH-60 DAP in the 160th out of Campbell. :yesnod

The ASVAB isn't even a part of the requirement for flight school, but just military service. For flight school, there is the ASTB. (Aviation Selection Test Battery) THAT is the test you need to worry about if you want the Army to put you behind the stick of a multimillion dollar piece of equipment that theoretically shouldn't be able to physically operate in the first place.

You need a 110 GT to be considered for WO flight school in the Army. Follow the link I posted...

...squid. :poke: :)

I listed the ASVAB score first because without the there's no reason to take the FAST. But I figure anyone even remotely interested in flight school can get a 110 GT in their sleep. I still think the medical qualifications are what stop most people.

That, or fear of flying.

This was my reason for suggesting a private lesson or two to make sure it's something you can do. It's an exciting vocation to a high school kid, but not everyone is suited for it.

Agreed. When I enlisted the contract listed I was coming in as an E-3 and got paid special duty pay from the minute i stepped in Great Lakes. Couldn't complain with that. I originally signed up for ET when I couldn't get the security clearance originally. ( Not allowed to have dual citizenship/ Had to check eligibility because my parents are immigrants). But I was surprised how accommodating they were at MEPSCOM to try to get me placed as a nuke.

Ok that sounds good. Where can I take the tests and how many chances do I have to pass?
