ive decided that when the time comes to build my motor, i want to do as much as possible myself. im going to have the motor hot tanked and magnafluxed, and bored twenty over. also going to deck it and align hone if nessecary. i want to do everything else my self, from file fitting the rings to plastigauging the bearing clearences. ive been looking around and found a really good thread stickied on KA-T.org following an engine build, guy made it look so easy, but i got to thinking... during his assembly everything went smoothly, all the bearings were within tolerances...my question is what if theyre not when i start? are new bearings needed in a situation like that?, i plan on using new clevite bearings, but im getting a little paranoid with the amount of money im spending here, i wanna do it right the first time. im just wondering what the next step would be if i plastigauged all the bearings and something was outta spec?

Also i remember Fiz's builder did something to the bearings as a saftey measure that id never heard of. He filed the edges where the two halves meet slightly, because he said that edge is so sharp that it can cause premature wear in some rare cases and it better to be safe than sorry...anyone ever heard of a precautionary step like this?

I really dont want any smart *** responses like "if you not comfortable with doing it yourself have it done professionally" or "dont try to skimp on cost by doing it yourself because your risking the motor"

Im not doing this to try and save money, i really just want to do it myself...any pointers from people who have assembled their own motors would be greatly appreciated...

well since ur doing it urself dont just start threads on nico and ask questions we can help and will help, but for something as important as this you are going to want to go talk to some of your local machine shops.

as far as filing the bearing, yes i have heard of that, but its a TINY amount, like maybe 4 passes with the file. Also, file the blocks bearing surface edge in the same manner, this also keeps metal from curling up under the bearing when u lay it in.

BUY NEW BEARINGS!!! and have your crank turned. Turning the crank is like $50, and Clevite bearings are $80 for the entire set. What you have to do is learn how to use a plastigauge, and plastigauge all bearings with the crank in order to find out just how much you need the crank turned. good luck.~Sam
