I have a 1990 maxima se with auto-trans (I know yuck). Recently I started to feel (hear) a noise like a bearing going. It is a rotational sound that quickens with the speed of the car. I thought maybe front wheel bearing but they seem ok, no resistance or grit. So I repacked them and reinstalled, but the noise persists. I am wondering if it could be a bearing on the output for the trans? The trans was replaced less than 5000 miles ago, along with both drive axles. I drive it hard but it does not shift poorly, hesitate, or anything besides this noise. I do not think you can hear the noise outside of the car. You can only hear it inside, like it is a resonance throughout the cabin.

Ideas? Am I thinking in the correct direction.

well I discovered the noise. I had a rim that was damaged (our lovely city streets here). Unfortunately I discovered it by the rim shattering while taking a turn. The manhole cover sticks up about an inch and a half, and I guess I hit it just right while hammering thru the corner, and WHAM! I was heading for the curb. Next thing I knew I hit the curb (wrecking 2 more rims) and was sliding down the sidewalk trying to miss the trees. At least no one was hurt and the car isn't too badly damaged.
