Fall is here, and winter is right around the corner. I live in Washington state and drive a 96' 240 SE. I'm looking for reccomendations on ultra-high-performance All-Seasons for my stock wheels. The size is 205-55-16 and I want decent traction in dry, damp, wet, and cold. I've started my search with three tires;1) Michelin Pilot Sport A/S - they last long, handle conditions good, and are rather pricey.2) Yokohama AVS DB S2 - don't last as long or cost as much as above3) BF Goodrich G-Force T/A KDWS - seem to be noisy, but also don't cost as much as the michelins

Does anyone have experience with any of these? I know cheap doesn't equal performance but it is always a factor. I'm looking for a good combo quite, long lasting, grippy tires for my fall/winter needs. What do ya think?

The best bang for the buck in that size would be the Sumitomo HTR+. Even on the test track I was within a fraction of a second on them against the Pilot Sport AS in the dry. Other good choices would be the Kumho Ecsta ASX and the new Avon Tech M550 A/S. If you pull up the test results on our website, you can see how these performed head-to-head on the same track using the same cars.

Seems like the Kumho ECSTA ASX is tried and true. Lots of the reviews for that tire were positive, and the price isn't much. However, the Sumitumos had bad reviews and I've never heard of Avon, so I'd rather go with something I can trust. Were you just reccomending those tires because they are cheap? What's the best of the best in the wet?

I love the pilsot sport A/S...except for the price...

if I could afford it(if you can..) I'd buy those and never look back..they wont leave you wondering if you have had better.

the HTR+ suck, IMO...premature treadwear is the key here..I've seen far too many mercedes, bmw, etc coming back with them worn slap out after 7-12k miles...

the AVS db2 isnt as good as the A/S..but then again, in my experience not much is...for the money, the Db S2 is a great tire..

Here's the thing, the A/S is about the only tire I know of that canc ombine good dry, wet, and cold traction, with a W or Y speed rating..but it costs.

pretty much there are a few things governing tires:1. compounds used2. casing design/materials3. tread design/advancement4. cost

you ramp any one of those up, you'll lose another. thusly, the A/S uses top notch materials, design, and compounds(3 different types across the tread!)..so ti costs money.

yokohama skimps a bit on he tread compounds, but it saves on cost..

see?

just a thought..nothing good ever comes cheap. ever.

If I were you I'd look at Falken 512 or BF Goodrich Traction T/A. I'm in BC and those are two great high value tires for the weather here.

Notice no one does tire test for "all season" at say 35-40F wet or 20F dry ambient.

Why they should be called Spring and Fall Tires!

Or Texas Tires

Just leave the Hoosiers out in the sun for an hour in Texas and they are ready to go
