Amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Los Angeles, there exists another world, an underground world of illicit trade in—not drugs or sex—but bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Street vendors may sell you an illegal bacon dog, but hardly anyone will talk about it, for fear of being hassled, shut down or worse. Our camera caught it on tape. One minute bacon dogs are sold in plain view, the next minute cops have confiscated carts, and ordered the dogs dumped into the trash.

Elizabeth Palacios is one of the few vendors willing to speak publicly. “Doing bacon is illegal,” she explains. Problem is customers love bacon, and Palacios says she loses business if she doesn’t give them the bacon they demand. “Bacon is a potentially hazardous food,” says Terrence Powell of the LA County Health Department. Continue selling bacon dogs without county-approved equipment and you risk fines and jail time.

Palacios knows all about that. She spent 45 days in the slammer for selling bacon dogs, and with the lost time from work, fines, and attorney’s fees, she fears she might lose the house that bacon dogs helped buy. She must provide for her family, but remains trapped between government regulations and consumer demand. Customers don’t care about safety codes, says Palacios. “They just want the bacon.”

In "Food Fight: Battle of the Bacon Dogs," reason.tv host Drew Carey takes a long look at the human cost of trying to prohibit trade in oh-so-tasty treats.

No, in California, the women have none at all. That's why I love CA.

Fat people should be killed. Period.

We could end world hunger just by killing them, and that's WITHOUT grinding them up and feeding them to starving Africans (which I think we should do too).

Also... I want to vomit when I see fat people.

However, bacon dogs are win.

What about those who are unhealthily skinny? Hell, you could wipe out most of Africa and not have to worry about passing them food at all. While you are at it, why not outlaw and kill smokers, anyone who drinks, anyone who does drugs of any kind, etc. etc. etc.

Soon, Earth could consist of only you.

I assume fat = /healthy so they should die. Following that logic then skinny = /healthy so they should die too.

Fat people should be killed because they are disgusting, and visually offensive, not because they aren't healthy, though our health care system wouldn't be in the dire straights it's in now if fat people were to be killed off.

All around, there's no upside to fat people being allowed to live.

Besides, it's not people's fault they are starving. It IS people's fault when they eat 4000 calories a day and take up two seats on an airplane, then ***** because the airline's want to charge them more.

I can't read your intention here, but I think the hate speech has gone far enough. Please try to rephrase any point you are making to be a little less inflammatory. Thanks.

What do you consider fat, anyone with >4% body fat?

FWIW, the limitations on the bacon dogs have nothing to do with getting fat but with getting food poisoning.

Overweight has a medical definition.

Why do people whine that people who say what I'm saying are 'being mean'? Fat people are causing the worse public health crisis America has faced. Ever.

If huge portions of the American public were underweight and costing billions and billions of dollars, I'd say we should do something about anorexic people. However, the fact that people think it's socially acceptable to be fat (and oddly enough, it's not socially acceptable to be anorexic. No one has interventions for people who weigh 220 pounds, but if a 5'3" girl weighs 105, people flip [and most of those people are the fat ones...]) is one of the reasons it's allowed to get as bad as it has.

So, which scale is "fat"? I know numerous people who would fall into the obese range who are only slightly overweight due to their physical stature, so that scale is not conclusive about anything.

But, that's OK. The Gov't can mandate it because they can fix everything.

Again, the limitations on selling bacon dogs has NOTHING AT ALL to do with fat. So, all your "kill fatty" comments are completely OT and worthless to this thread.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of BMI. I've been around 9% body fat and had a BMI of 26, just because I was muscular and weighed 185.

The reason I put the BMI graph up there was it was easier to find than an image about body fat%.Men should have no more than 17%, women should have no more than 24%.
audtatious wrote:But, that's OK. The Gov't can mandate it because they can fix everything.
1.) If they started euthanizing fat people, you don't think they would all start trying to lose weight and be healthy?

2.) Fat people cost you WAY more than social welfare does. Why are you still ok with letting fat people drain your funds, and not the poor?Collectively, you all pay into the insurance pool, and the fat people take the majority of it. I mean, another part of it is inane lawsuits from people sueing doctors for bad results, not bad practice, but that's one of the main reason insurance costs have 78% in the last 6 years.

3.) Are you still taking me seriously? Of course we shouldn't kill fat people. I'm not saying we shouldn't degrade and socially stigmatize them so they lose weight, because they really are a serious public health issue, but kill them? I though it was clear I was joking when I suggested putting them in a blender and feeding them to starving Africans.

Because we all know that no thread changes topic throughout it's course...Interesting discourse must be sacrificed at the sake of maintaining the conversation on a boring topic that affects... about .1% of the board's population? How many of us sell bacon dogs from carts? Then again, how many of are/have to deal with fat people?

*Sigh* When will the pwntrain stop, Matt? Man, I can beat you at an arguement I don't even agree with (while drunk no less).

Which is fine as a rule of thumb but it does not mean that people are automatically going to have health issues because they are somewhat larger than that.
JimmyMethod wrote:1.) If they started euthanizing fat people, you don't think they would all start trying to lose weight and be healthy?
Maybe, maybe not. It's too rediculous of a consideration.

I'm not for anyone draining funds. Let's do stupid people as well. We could start killing all the kids who drop out of school as that would get rid of 90% of our future welfare burden.

I make a motion that "JS Thread:" (for Jerry Springer) be appended as a prefix to this and any future topics that "evolve" this way.

Then again, that's pretty much all of them in this forum.

I read about this awhile back on a food blog, what a stupid issue.

VIVA STREET FOOD!

Honestly, it's still probably a lot better for us than most of the processed crap that comes in boxes and bags. FDA approval doesn't mean anything anymore.

Let people make their own decisions.

Oh to be 21 again, in college and thinking the world of myself.

If this political forum is going to be about who can "win" arguments, then it will surely move away from actual intellectual discourse into a pissing contest. That's not the point of this forum.
