What I would do is check the alternator first by jumping the car off and disconnecting one of the battery terminals. If the car keeps running the alternator is working and supplying the juice needed to feed the fuel pump and such, if it dies you have either a bad alternator or bad wiring somewhere. I found last night that either my wiring was wrong or that my alternator has yet again, fudged the bucket (I just got it rebuilt a year ago).
As for batteries, the best recommendation I can give it to get one with the longest warranty. I have bought one battery in the past 4 years, and my wiring/alternator keeps killing them just in time to swap it out for a new one.
