It started raining the other day and my sunroof was open, natch. So I run out and hit the start button without the brake, cause I don't need to engine running, just the accessories powered. Slide the sunroof closed, head back inside, but I didn't shut anything off. 'cause nothing was turned on. I thought.

An hour later, the car won't start, not enough juice. OK, I have a special portable battery in the trunk, so I'll just hook it up and...Dang, the trunk switch doesn't work without battery power. Well, there's a switch on the dash--that also needs electricity. Hmm, can't use the spare battery, have to use my cables...that are in the trunk.

What have I learned? 1) If the battery is dead, a BUNCH of things won't work. B) Put the emergency tools in the car, not the trunk. III) Be nice to the wife, who drove across town in her car with the other set of cables.

Emergency tools do not belong in a vehicle
They could become deadly in case of an accident or a sudden stop.
Especially a hazard with children or other passengers in the vehicle.
All you need to do is leave the radio on all the time like I do
Whenever you press the ignition and not starting the car the radio will remind you to turn off the ignition.
Your battery may need replacement if the individual cells are not accepting a full charge.
A battery hydrometer is a cheap tool.
Obtain one and test your battery.

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of components which actually turn on at a single selection of the switch. Lesson learned the hard way :)
