Ive seen a lot of 240s with a battery relocation, i really dont see a reason to, the only thing i can imagine is to make room under the hood.I want to know why people relocate the battery

Better weight distribution / space / looks cleaner / to fit intercooler piping.I got the summit kit(15 feet of 2 gauge) and it killed a optima battery in 8 months and had all kinds of starting problems. I should of got 15 feet of 0 gauge amp wire! I switched to a Mazda MX-5 battery up front and havent had 1 problem.

Weight distribution the weight of the battery being on/over the rear wheels.

Also like supream said. the battery trayis where you usually run the Intercooler piping so you usually need to get rid of the battery from up front or go with a small battery. Plus IMO it does look alot cleaner.

I ordered the relocate kit from Jegs? for like $60 and it was pretty damn easy to do. my only complaint the battery box i got is F'N HUGE!

i did mine for intercooler piping clearance. i used 2 gauge i think, with an optima, with a grounding kit still in the engine bay (yes i ran the power and ground from the trunk to the engine bar). never had a problem.

Be carefully with some battery boxes. A buddy of mine got in a bad accident and the plastic straps that connected the box to the car snapped and the battery flew out and hit him in the side of the head. So be sure you install it properly and get a reputable battery box.

I moved my battery because... well I don't know exactly. It just seemed like something to do.

I used a 0-gauge BMW 3-series battery cable I got off of eBay for $35. It was just barely long enough to use in my S14. I routed it under the rear seats and carpet and into the firewall through the ECU's hole.

For the box I used the cheapest one Autozone had, but made myself a little bracket out of bar steel that fits over the battery itself, bolts to two studs that run down either side of the battery, out of two holes I drilled into the bottom of the box, and through the trunk metal. This way the battery is actually connected by metal to metal and box is just there to keep it covered.

I also bought a webbing belt from the dollar store to secure the lid of the box. Looks very clean.

also ive seen people move them to put a "super" short ram intake. instead of making the piping go all the way to the OEM spot, they just make a really short pipe and put the filter in the place of the battery

well i learned the hard way not to relocate the battery to the same side as the driver. it makes suspension tuning much harder

my relocation right up for some pictures of the process.

ps

don't put it on the same side as you.

also not pictured is the battery tie down that i installed inside the box. if you do events and they check it, you must have the boxed bolted down and the battery strapped down also... G forces does some crazy **** as stated above.

im with this guy...(didnt want to use the ...cause well i dont know him so i cant speak on brains) ..BUT i moved mine cause i needed to do the FMIC piping thing like just about everybody else. i happened to use -1 gauge wire from the batt to engine bay (got it from carquest, connectorized, sept one end on POSI) for a good price) with a PHAT tsunami gold connector made for stereo amps. and the ground i ran out and under to the chassis and bolted it onto the sanded area, then clear coated it like 5 times to prevent rust. looks pretty gangsta' IMO. and kragen/ autoxone (thats not a spelling aiirreerr) has functional boxes for nice prices. overall the sytem has not had any issues, but ive not been good (till lately) about the terminal cleaning. welp there you have it.

in case you wanted to know.

USDM S13/S14 is heavy on the driver side front. Shifting the battery to passenger rear helps balance. Also, the engine puts down more power to the passenger side rear wheel than the driver side. (that's why passenger side always slips first). Having battery to weight it down helps.

nice. theres doo dads for that sorts issue.. i think they are called lsd's??? anybody, anybody...i keed. i keeed. yeah factory diffs blow my big balls! i guesse the extra weight on the passenger side helps, but it just seems to be a logical place to relocate the batt as well. WERD.

Here's two more pictures of my install. In the first one you can see the bracket lying across the top of the battery. The black mark is sharpie where I marked where to grind in order to clear the top of the box. You can see how the box is a little distorted from the studs running up the sides, but this isn't evident when the top is on.

...and in this one you can see the places in the underbody where the studs were poked through into the trunk.

relocation because there is no room for battery in the engine bay anymore due to engine swap and the turbo being on the other side, it would hit the intercooler piping and air intake.

I did it similar to Biggamehit. Just not in the trunk, behind the passenger seat. Be advised that if you race SCCA this will put you into another class (prepared) which you may not be competitive at.
