I picked up my G35 Coupe in January 2003, which means my original battery is now 5+ years old.

I'm thinking I should, proactively, replace it. Any recommendations for what kind of battery I should replace it with?

Thanks. . . . .Stu

If you plan on upgrading the stereo get an optima yellow top. Red top for normal, OEM, conditions.

If you made 5 years on the original battery you've done well. I've always had good luck with Interstate Batteries, you might give them a look while shopping around for your new one.

Just don't go cheap and you should be fine. Plan on spending $100.

Hi Stu,

I have been using Gold-Duralast Batteries for a long time and never had 1 single issue. It's about 100 dollars for the G35. I just replaced the battery in my wife's I30 with the Duralast Gold, the car turns over much faster and the lights shine brighter.

Hope that helps...

If you have a Costco membership I would definitely look there too. I know they carry batteries but not exactly sure which brand, they tend to re-badge everything with Kirkland Signature. However, they usually have descent quality for the price...

I have not personally had any experience with their batteries. If anyone has I'd be curious to know their experience and if they know which batteries are they carrying. I'm most likely going to be in the market for a new battery sooner rather than later

Anything but optima batteries. I have used them in many different applications and they have only proven to disappoint me over time. I've put them in daily driven cars and trucks, my mustang which was only driven once a month and was kept on a trickle charger, and on forklifts which were started over a dozen times a day every day. Every one of these batteries fell short to a conventional battery. One died with less than a year of use.

Buy a mid to upper end conventional battery.

Consider yourself lucky to get 5 years out of a battery. I've had good luck over the years with Sears Diehard Gold and Interstate has a good reputation as well. I tried a search once for the CCA rating of the Infiniti battery in my G but was unable to locate it. I would also get a price from your local Infiniti parts department. Whatever you decide, go for the best battery with the highest CCA rating you can find.

I'm kind of surprised. I went with the Duralast Gold for my I30 and I love it, the only weird thing was that my idle went down really low (500 RPMs vs the 650 it's supposed to be at).

Anyways, I think I paid around $70 for that. Why would the same type of battery for the G35 be $30 more?

Here is the price for the G35 from the autozone website...maybe the G35 needs more power vs the I30? By more power higher = CCAs??

Gold-Duralast / Battery (640 cold cranking Amps)Warranty - 8 YR 35-DLG Price: $82.99 Core: $12.00 Total: $94.99 So it's 82.99 with the core trade in...the Optima Red Battery is 179, is that really worth the extra $$?

Thanks guys.

Sounds like an Interstate, Optima or Sears DieHard is the way to go.

I'll check later, but I'm sure my I30 battery was putting out over 700 CCA.

Maybe it's the physical shape of the battery that is making it more expensive. *shrugs*

Price could be based on your zip code.

Are the Optima batteries totally maintance free? That would be a plus not having to add water every so often. Also heard they don't weigh as much.

Yes, they are a sealed unit..."gel-cell". Make sure whatever you get is the JDM style or you will have to modify some things to get it to fit properly.

When I was checking consumer reports a while back, they liked Napa Legend and Duralast 35DL best. Diehard Gold was third. The Duralast was a CR best buy

I'd avoid the redtop Optimas. They don't handle full discharges well. 2 or 3 will render the battery pretty much useless. The Deep Cell Optimas (Yellow or Blue) are great so long as you don't have a huge need for high CCA's. Deep Cycles are not designed for maximum CCA's like a starting battery is. However, they are more than sufficient for most people so long as the climate isn't terribly cold. I ran a Bluetop in my first 240 after bad experiences with two redtops. The nice thing about that battery is that since ints a Marine battery, it has the typical automotive posts along with a threaded post. I sued the threaded post as a connection point for some heavy gauge amp wiring so that I wouldn't have to cut up the factory wiring or shove a ring terminal in there somewhere. I carried that same battery over into my second 240sx, and it still worked strong when I traded the car in. The battery had lasted me some 6 years despite many many full discharges. I have a bluetop in the Titan now.

The only negative about the Optimas are that the sizes and terminal configurations tend to be a bit limited so it can be difficult finding a battery that is a good fit.

Optima Yellow top or Duralast Platinum if you plan on upgrading stereo

I opted for the Duralast Platinum, and I love it.

It would have been...every car guy loves to hear "pro-rated" Dealership said my battery didn't pass the load test, but since it was still under warrenty it would only be $75 for a new OEM replacement. No thx....got in my car (it started right up) and drove off!!

BTW...the OEM replacement battery is something crazy like 180 dollars!!
