Battery Maintenance

Just bought a 2004 Altima SL. I noticed that the battery is not maintenance free. Its been a long time since we use to add distilled water to the battery. Is that all that is needed to be done or is their more? Assuming the terminals are kept clean too. Why would Nissan do this with all the great MF batteries out their today?

Cleaning-Good old water, baking soda and a brush to clean the connectors on the cables. I would make sure that you use electrical lube after you clean the battery cables. The grease conducts electricity and ensures a good seal/connection to the terminal.

Water-Unscrew the vent cap on the top of the battery and make sure the water level is up to at least the bottom of the cap. If the battery water level is allowed to get too low, the heat generated within the battery will destroy the battery cells.
