I am not thinking about relocating the battery on my car. I am however thinking of adding a second one to power my keyless entry and anything else I can think off.

Obviously a solar charger and a small spare battery weigh more than wire running to the battery in the bonnet. But I do not want to tamper with any grommets/wiring unless I can do so easily.

So my question is: Are battery gasses released from non sealed (AGM) batteries safe? Corrosion on battery cables/terminals is not safe to touch or breath.

I know some BMW estates have them as do some Jaguars.

I think it should be just fine considering it would be in your boot.

Under normal conditions, AGM batteries are sealed. The only time they vent gas is if they're hideously overcharged.

If worse comes to worse, the gas produced by an overcharged AGM battery is no different than from any other lead-acid battery: A mixture of hydrogen and oxygen - potentially explosive if it accumulates in a sufficient concentration.

Our previous Miata had OEM battery in the trunk and the E420 had it under the back seat- both were vented to outside of car if I recall correctly through a vinyl hose or some such contraption.....the Miatas original battery was still going strong at 91K and 8 years when car was totaled in an accident. The typical location under the hood is about the worst possible location to put a battery in as far as longevity, due to the immense heat of the engine.

a keyless remote, alarm system, etc really does not warrant a second battery at all, as almost every single newer car has these features and does fine with a single battery.....even the little econoboxes with puny batteries and alternators.

The reason for me wanting to add a second battery is to use a third fuse box (For those accessories) only. And to simplify the installation.

I am interested on how the battery gasses were vented outside?

IIRC - Wes and possibly Shane relocated batteries to the trunk.

I would see it being a lot more effective to just run a second line from the battery with a separate fuse panel rather than just add a battery AND fuse panel.

I agree though, a trunk or back-seat mounted battery is the way to go, it makes them last considerably longer. I replaced my battery in the Q about 2 years ago only because someone left the car to my door open all night when it was about 3°F outside, and it busted the battery and leaked fluid in the battery box. That battery was at least 5 years old and seemed like it was just fine.

I might consider putting the battery in the trunk in my cadillac too... :)

I get no response from the webmaster.

On topic : ...you can buy sealed battery boxes for the trunk with the hose and crap ready to go. try Summit racing. Then you'll have room for the SC. :D

Hey good to hear from you again (I once called you about the Rear Shock Tower Bar you made...)

I am at a cross road here and I can't seem to make up my mind.
