Battery Issue? Or just a short?

Hey all, mom's Been having some issues lately with her pathfinder, after doing some shopping she came out side to leave and the car wouldn't start, I get there to jump it off, and when she tried to turn the key It didn't do anything but when I popped the hood I heard a clicking noise coming from around the fusebox area, and the battery had spark when I was attaching the cables to her car, Anybody Know what could be causing it cause the battery is fairly new and starts and runs the rest of the time. (for reference it's a 04 Pathfinder Platinum Edition)

I was just having some trouble with random no starts, sometimes car wouldn't crank turn the key nothing happened just one slight click.

Ended up being the starter replaced it and haven't had any trouble and car starts faster.

Did u still have power when u tried to crank it? Cause ours was acting like it had a weak battery (dim interior lights, gauges, headlights etc) but the minute it's either hooked up or the car it's hooked up to is started, it fires right up as though nothing has happened

Yeah I had power. I'd take it to a local parts store and have the alternator and battery checked out.

Well we had our mechanic check it out after it happened the first time he said everything seemed normal but I'm starting to wonder if it's the battery or alternator my self, I know by looking at the sticker on the batter that's it's around 3-4 years old so maybe it's due for another one? Or maybe it is a short, how common are shorts on the r50 generation pathfinders?
