If i install a new sub and a 1000 watt amp, would I really need a battery cap or should my battery and alternator be able to handle it?

It should be able to handle it no problem, especially if it is a Class-D amp. You may notice a slight decrease in rpm under heavy load during idle though, but overall there shouldn't be any other problems.

If it was me i'd get an Optima Red Top battery http://www.optimabatteries.com...p.php. Or a Kintetic 1400 http://www.kinetikaudio.com/hc1400.asp Just to be safe. Can't find a price on the Red Top but I bought mine for $130. Only cause the guy didn't know the retail price and sold it to me to keep my business. Should be able to get the Kinetic for about $350+/- though.

I would recommend getting a cap. Less draw on your battery, deeper harder bass notes and improved quality overall. Install is without and then add a cap. You will notice a huge difference

You will lose one volt of pre-out if you install a cap though. Sometimes it's best to lose some to gain in the long run. Your call.
