Don't let the brake light fool ya. When your battery or charging system goes down to very low volts, for some reason the light comes on. Pay attention to the info screen as it should say something like "battery charge low." Just to be sure, try this: with the key in and power on (not engine on) apply the parking brake. Now obviously the Brake light will be on. While watching the brake light closely, pull the lever to release the parking brake. You will notice (easy to see at night) that the light is alot dimmer when the brake is released.
Now to answer the real question:I had the same problem recently (brake light and everything) and found that the alternator had crapped out. I did the same thing, bought a brand new battery and it was nice for about a day or two. Then dead. So I replaced the alternator (nightmare of a job) and now its fine!! So your 97 alternator lasted 10 years, pretty good for a car part with a tough task of running the whole electrical system
