You could have a vampiric drain on the battery when the car is off, but when you say almost immediately are we talking minutes? If it is a bad battery that won't hold or take a charge that shouldn't be very hard for Autozone to diagnose.

My battery experiences:I had a brand new battery once that had a bad cell, but overall the battery test good. It killed 3 alternators before they figured it out. I also had a dirty battery that was causing current to be conducted across the top of the battery, making my car electronics go haywire.

A qualified tech (they take courses on how to use the tester) at Autozone should be able to diagnose your friend's problem for free.

Since it runs 'forever', then alternator is good - the battery or your connections could be the problem.
