I have an 85 and they bolt in. Check for two bolts on the inside of the joint.

What was involved in removing them?

the alignment may be done wrong... meaning they don't center the wheel properly before aligning it which would mean it pulls when the steering wheel is centered... if the alignment is done right... it could be a wheel bearing

I'm actually in the process of replacing a ball joint and spindle on my '85, so I guess this post is useful to me as well. My spindle was bent to heck and back, so we just cut it off and my ball joint unbolted pretty easily. We haven't replaced it yet though.

If the truck is still pulling to one side try checking your tie-rod end link's for damage.
