When having your tires and wheels balanced, some guys only want the weights on the inside of the wheel. I understand they are looking for appearance, but is this an accurate balance? Would like to hear some opinions. I don't like the weights on the outside of the wheel, but at the same time, I want a good high speed balancing.

Which one do you want more? looks vs balance.

The Hunter 9700 has within it's parameters a setting to perform a two-plane balance, using clip on weights to the innermost wheel lip(backside of wheel) and the outermost part of the inner barrel of the wheel(usually concealed behind spokes, if that better explains it. This is usually a good compromise.

The balance is most important as the car is driven regularly on the interstate. With the compromise, it sounds like I may be giving up a little on the balance side. Is that a correct assumption?

Most smart people have their wheels balance alone by adding or grinding off weight to make them perfect then the tires are match mounted [rotated on wheel to minimize any residual radial runout].

Then with quality tires such as Michelin, what ever remaining balance weight is tiny.

Every time you replace or flip tires you check the wheel alone balance.....that way you immediately see any bending damage.

If you are meticulous, tire wheel maintenance will cost as much as the tires. If your car makes your living [traveling salesman] and you spend more than a few hours per day on the highway.....lack of vibration is a small price to pay and tax deductible.NEW QUALITY Tires can easily change 500-1000 miles after installation, so a rebalnce is necessary , then they can stay pretty good for the next 3,000 miles.

The closer to the center you place the weight the more you have to use since the imbalance is usually in the tread for example a 10 gram tread imbalance will need a 26/15=1.73 x [10] or 17 gram weight on the 15" rim. Inside the rim it might need a 20 gram stickon weight.
