Hi, this is Philip (NICO Rogue Forum Moderator),
I have owned both an '03 Altima with the 1st gen QR and my '08 Rogue with the newer 2nd gen QR. The balance shaft system on the 2nd gen motor has been changed. It's been moved further away from the crank and is now held by 6 bolts instead of the previous 4. The JWT balance shaft removal kit will definitely not work on the newer 2nd gen motor. The only way to disable it is to remove the chain (by cutting?), remove the tensioner, and somehow block the oil feed port for the tensioner.
Here is the problem:
The old QR balance shaft removal could be done by simply removing the lower oil pan to gain access. The new QR has a different lower oil pan location (located near the centre) which prevents easy access to the balance shaft timing chain on the front of the motor. You now have to remove the upper and lower oil pans to get at it. Once in there, you then have to remove the chain and somehow fab a piece to block off the oil feed port for the tensioner. This is similar to what the JWT kit supplies. This is definitely not a 1 hour job! More like several hours.
The purpose of the balance shaft is to cancel the inherent up/down shake produced by all I-4 motors. The QR is particularly bad for this as it has such a long stroke. IMHO, I would not remove or disable it. The few extra HP freed up is not worth the trade offs.
