getting some wiseco pistons ordered in, going to have the block bored and honed, sticking with the stock rods, just trying to figure out if i should get my crank balanced? cuz thats like another $500 id rather not spend.. ive done my research and from what ive found is that there are two sides, there are some guys who say you always need to get your crank balanced, especially with new pistons

On the flip side ive read that this already is a very balanced engine, and wisecos are going to be very close in weight and wouldnt need to be balanced.. this isnt being built into a drag monster, just needed to overbore my cylinders, im upgrading to gt28r's with bigger injectors and such, but its still a street car, and i think i have the self control to not rev my baby to 9000rpm

and maybe a very stupid question, i have a scale at work that can measure to the hundred thousandeth of a gram, if theres nobody else in the room walking around lol, with these new pistons i could take a dremel to the inside of them and lightly etch them to be exactly proportionate to their corresponding piston theyre replacing, if i did this, could this void needing a crank balance? or am i dumb for considering this..

on a side note, any one trust a good shop in the salt lake area? im nervous picking a shop cuz they all seem to be all about the big v8's

I think that I'd stay with the recommended balancing because these little engines really work hard doing their work with two twins on it's back, and the rotating assembly really needs to be spot on for long term happiness. I've seen a few builds go south from simple oil contamination and also some small tolerance issues with the crank- bottom line is I would not risk my investment and happiness on something like that.

You also mentioned doing basically the piston balancing yourself which would more or less put you at balanced if you matched them up, and since that's more or less what a shop would do (with experience of course) it isn't a dumb idea. I'd just be very careful to KNOW beforehand exactly how and where to go about that work, if it's doable and you can get the info I'd go for it especially considering that super-accurate scale you can use.

And as for a shop I myself would search out a Z32-oriented mechanic who understands the intricacies of the VG30DETT well and can guide you with some of the setup such as ECU and clocking turbos, etc., and avoid shops that look more to swap in other stuff.

sweet, ill do some more research on that..ya now im really hesitant about balancing it because the machine shop my friend referred me to who had nothing but good things to say about this shop told me that on an engine like this id probably get away with not balancing it.. which one is just bad for buisness.. but now i dont know how much i trust that guy.. its proving difficult to find any one who knows these engines in my area.. i have one more well recommended shop to talk to, bout an hour and half away, but my buddy whos running a 680hp S2 said they balanced his rotating assembly to a quarter of a gram! need to start blue printing my engine also
