I'm wondering if my problem may be from a bad wheel bearing. It started not too long anfter I was in alton, IL and went over a deep pothole at very slow speed. The impact sounded titanic but an immediate lookover showed no damage to the body or frame. I did notice the drive back to Arkansas the passenger rear wheel 9 the one that went in the pothole) felt wobbly on the highway. I assumed that this was because the person placing the new tire (done just 5 minutes before impact) on it did a bad balance job. A week later I noticed that the wheel makes a loud chirping sound that sped up with the tire speed. The problem got worse very rapidly (a noticable change after only one commute). Is this a bad wheel bearing or something worse? I noticed only the slightest hint of wobble in the rear axle but the other side has the same and there are no problems with it.

Thanks.

I honestly would take it in to get the tire checked out. Its very possible it could have seperated the belts in the tire(cannot remember the correct term for the life of me), threw off the balance, or even messed up your allignment. If the bearing have gone bad most of the time its a constant sound, rhythmic sound. My bet is the tire or allignment.

+1 on the above reply. That does not sound like a bad wheel bearing to me.

It's better to get it checked out sooner than later in case your tire is damaged. Or perhaps some of the wheel weights fell off.

usually with a wheel bearing you can load one side of the car up at speed by turning one direction and the noise will get loader on one side and be nonexistent on the other. also when the car is in the air you can move the wheel up and down and side to side by hand this will result in movement when the wheel bearings are on the way out or are already out

Just to make an update: I'm kind of embarassed about this one, but i listened closer and noticed the sound wasn't comming from the rear wheel, it was comming from the front. The problem: The lugs were'nt torqued down. Now the Z is fully functional.

Glad it was an easy fix!! Don't worry about the being embarrased, we all have done something to that effect. The littlest things are the easiest to get by us.
