I am so mad right now, and I need some help. I have had my rb25 s13 for 2 years now, and a few months back it started making a screaming sound. that is the only way I can describe it. full or close to full throttle it starts to "scream". it builds and holds boost fine, but the turbo makes a bad noise. and it does not do this in neutral while reving the car. only under load. I am in Flight school for the ARMY and have had NO time to mess with it, until now. So I buy a used rb25 turbo and it sits while I wait for a break in school, and this week I finally have off and decide to put it on.

Let me backtrack. the reason I think it is the turbo is because the inside of my hotside intake is coated in a nice black sludgy oil. I use Mobile 1 and change it ALL the time. my oil practically looks fresh when I drain it. So I figure it must be coking and leaking and making noise, it's gotta be bad! well, I am not so sure anymore.

Today I took off the "bad" turbo and got some surprises. very little shaft play if any. and there doesnt seem to be any interference with the housing. But...

There were 4 broken studs on the exhaust manifold. All on the top, they were the two top toward the front and the two top towards the back. I have never checked for these, and just noticed them now. all the bottoms are on and the two on top are closest to the turbo; the two middle studs on top. could this be an exhaust leak? and if so, how the hell do you get those studs out? Pull the head? this is like a kick in the di#k. thats what I get for being a penny pincher.

Guys, if you can help me figure this out, I'd be very grateful.

a nasty exhaust leak can sound like a farked turbo and since you are missing quite a few studs i gaurentee you have a leak.

you may be able to drill a hole in the center of the broken stud and turn it out with on extractor. but most likely you will need to drill it out and put a helicoil in.

pull the manifold off and with enough time an patience and some good sharp drill bits drill holes in the centers and use extractor bits (not easy outs, they will break)...
