Hi, I have a 95 G20 with 93,000 miles. Suddenly the transmission wouldn't perform the 2 to 3 shift. I did the self test procedure outlined in the FSM and the error code pointed to the revolution sensor.

I realize this forum deals mostly with Q45's, but I just need some general advice(not call Joe and he'll take care of you).

Is replacing the revolution sensor the thing to do? Can another problem throw this code?

Thanks for your time, Eric

Well, bad news. transmission shop says third gear "blew up" and contaminated the whole unit. $2035 for a rebuild. Ouch!!!I guess pan drops and fluid changes don't guarantee long life!

What fresh ATF does, especially in conjunction with an ATF cooler, is reduce the rate of wear. It cannot protect against a mechanical failure of a planetary gear.

Local rebuilds are not very long lived since the rebuilder seldom sees a Nissan unit, nor is there a production line optimized for doing a whole series of that one particular model. Best to get a remanufactured unit assembled at the Nissan factory from Joe.

I would take it to the Infiniti dealer and have them give you a second opinion. It could be just an electrical problem.

If it turns out the trans. is shot, then I would either buy a trans. from the dealer or have the trans. sent out to a good shop like LevelTen.

You might also pick up a JDM trans. for cheap on eBay.

I am very leery of local trans. shops. Many of them are full time crooks and part time mechanics. That doesn't mean that the shop that you went to is shady, but it is a good idea to get a second opinion from the dealer.

Never seen a rebuilt transmission [open by a shop] in all of Atlanta [seen dozens] that even come close [if they work at all] compared to the factory rebuilt.

A big waste of money to even consider a local rebuilder but you might get lucky.

Many so called local rebuilders just buy from dealer [$1600] and say they did the work charging the normal $2800.

You get what you pay for from JATCO Tennessee [Nissan factory rebuilder].

My sentiments exactly. My buddy had a little hiccup in his transmission. The shop he went to wanted to charge him $400 to diagnose the problem by removing/dissassembling the unit. Then he would get charged more to fix whatever was wrong. He knew better, fortunately. Turned out to be something pretty minor. Competent transmission techs seem to be quite rare.
