Well, I recently picked up a 90 240sx Hatch (ka24e auto SOHC...I know, I know, but hey, $1,150). Well the auto transmission jerks into drive and reverse and sometimes hesitates to get into gear. It also shifts around 4-5 RPMs. So yeah, Ive already been informed that its a bad transmission. Most likely it will be a daily driver with no intention of being highly modded. So heres what Im thinking:

1.) Ka24de (DOHC) + 5pd conversion

2.) 5sp swap/conversion

3.) Another auto transmission

4.) The long shot sr20det (but I'd kind of already ruled this one out considering I dont drag or street race and I wont be entering car shows, so the $3k +/- would basically be a waste)

Your thoughts?

Just put in the 5spd and call it good. Daily commuter cars do best when left, for the most part, unmodified. Tamper with too much, and you'll have an unending project on your hands.. not that that's a bad thing, but I digress..

Yeah I guess...but I see ka24de's with the transmission most of the time, and if the engine has to be moved, etc. etc., I was thinking I could just drop it and swap in the complete ka24de + transmission.

BTW, anyone know how I would setup shipping for a engine if someone else has the engine?

No drag, no auto, no race. Just put in another auto transmission, no point in doing all this extra work for a daily driver. Save the money and buy a manual car if you want 5 spd.

Yeah, if you do the swap to maunal, it will be much more involved if you were just putting in a new auto transmission. The E to DE swap is even worse, needing harness and ecu changes as well. If you just want a car to go from point A to point B, put in an auto transmission (which you should be able to score dirt cheap from someone else swapping) and call it a day.
