2006 Infiniti M35 Sport - 64K miles, extended warranty
Recent 60K mile service except the radiator hoses

Problem: Engine temperature gauge is spiking to the maximum range for short periods of time (2-3mins) and then quickly drops back to normal (50% of gauge). No engine warning lights.

Scenario & Notes: Occurs about every other day driving in stop and go traffic (50 mph max) usually to work in the morning so the outside temp is 70s. When the engine temp gauge spikes the AC immediately blows neutral air (not cold or hot) and I hear a lot of fan noise from the engine. The engine performance is not effected when this occurs. When the temperature is spiked it doesn't fluctuate in relation to my throttle. It happens idling at stop lights and while driving. Infiniti dealer said to wait until it happens regularly so they can re-create it in the shop. It should be covered under my warranty, but I'm nervous about any major damage while I wait.

So is this a faulty temperature sensor/gauge or do I actually have an engine over-heating issue?

Thanks for any input or advice on how to handle this.
Dustin

:welcome: to NICO!

The newer engines have a cooling system design that makes bleeding the system after opening it far more difficult that older Nissan designs.

Was your 60K service done at the dealership?

In any case I would recommend going through the cooling system bleeding process again. You can read up on it in the factory service manual at www.nicoclub.com/FSM/

Good luck!

That is almost certainly the cause.

Do you hear a gurgling noise if you slowly raise the rpms in Park?

If so it is most likely you have a trapped air bubble.

There should be an air bleeding procedure in the factory service manual... www.nicoclub.com/FSM/

Yeah on all aluminum engines, you dont get a lot of leeway with cooking them, I wouldnt "wait"..

There is an air relief plug on the heater hose. In the FSM, page CO-12.. It gives a pretty detailed procedure for changing the coolant, looks pretty straight forward.
