I just took my car in to a Nissan dealership for routine service. The Infinity Dealership is 30 miles away. Anyway, I have a 2000 Q45 with 124K miles on it. The service manager told me that I need new struts at a cost of $3,200 plus I have sludge in the engine. They checked that because my check engine light had been going on and off intermittently.
Is there a way of removing the sludge if it's not too bad? I'm not sure how it got there because I never go more than 5K miles between oil changes. I do use one of those quickie lube places from time to time, and they use Pennzoil. I have read that Pennzoil sometimes causes sludge. I also read that using synthetic oil and changing it every 500 miles for a couple of months will sometimes do the trick of removing the sludge. Any suggestions would be welcome.
The other issue was that they said I needed 4 new struts costing $3,200! The 2000 model has electronically controlled struts which apparently are very expensive. I'm going to get a second opinion at the Infinity dealership. In the meantime, are there are any less expensive fixes for struts that have gone bad?
Thanks in advance.
