Have a 2001 quest which seem to be missing. When I am at a light it almost wants to cut off. Carried it to dealership they said it didn't like the Autolite plugs I put in it, needed cap and rotor, number 1 and 4 cylinders had 60 pounds pressure and the air filter box was warped sucking air. I put new cap and rotor and NGK iridium plugs in. It's still skipping, what could the problem be? Would the platinum plugs make that much difference?

Do you mean the compression was only 60 psi in #1 and #4 cylinder?
If so that is very low, essentially zero, and you have a serious mechanical problem such as cylinder wall/piston/ring damage or valve seating issues.
Little or no power is being produced by those 2 cylinders. The engine will never run properly like that.
The cause of this low compression must be repaired first. Don't waste any more money on anything until then.

Yes they said 90 was what it was supposed to be

No, more like 190 to 210 psi.
60 is very low

Put some Lucas fuel treatment in it and it seems to be running better. Does that make sense?

Its not going to fix low compression, so no.

Those mechanics sound like a bunch of douche nuggets to me...

In the realm of non-performance engines, an engine "not liking the plugs" is just ridiculous unless someone really messed up the gap when they put them in. If there's spark getting to the plug, it will fire - doesn't matter what brand.

Why did it need a cap and rotor? Were they cracked or something?

The air filter box was warped causing an air leak. So? Everything of importance is behind the air filter (hence it being the very first thing the air hits when it comes in), so unless you have a gaping hole bypassing the air filter sucking in dirt, it makes absolutely zero difference.

A PSI rating of 60 is actually quite low for those 2 cylinders, so you're essentially a 4-banger. However, if 2 cylinders drop significant pressure at the same time, it's usually caused by 2 cylinders sitting next to each other with a blown head gasket between them. The 1 and 4 pistons on that engine are on completely different sides of the engine, so, presuming it ran smooth prior to this episode, whatever caused one to fail must have magically happened on the opposite side of the engine at the exact same time.

I've never heard of a proper compression rating at 90psi, so that alone throws up big red flags for me. Standard compression on this motor is about 160psi warm, 120 cold.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like your mechanic knows what he's talking about, or is trying to rip you off. I'd definitely take it somewhere else before you throw any more parts at it. Even O'Riley's will do some basic troubleshooting for free, which probably includes a compression test.

Thanks, it sounded kind of funny to me too. I'm not a mechanic but I know enough to be dangerous. It is actually a 6 cyl. The cap and rotor they said was worn in the center they said. I couldn't understand why it needed plugs that csost almost $11 a piece, I had Autolite ' s in it and changed them to ngk iridium's. I started putting some Lucas fuel treatment in it and it has stopped some of the missing it was doing. Except for the missing it was doing it runs good enough to drive it everyday back and to to work which is about a 80 mile round trip. I took it to the nissian dealership thinking I could trust them, guess I figured wrong. .

It is a 6-cylinder, but if you've only got 60 psi in 2 cylinders, those 2 cylinders aren't really doing anything and the remaining 4 are doing all the work was the idea.

Dirty injectors can certainly cause sputtering and running rough although I don't think I've heard of them actually causing a vehicle to die before. I guess it's possible if you got a bad tank of gas from somewhere... If it seems to be getting better with the lucas stuff, I'd say go ahead and see how it's going by the end of the tank.

At the end of the day, the dealership is out to make money just like anyone else.
