I have a 240sx with a bad rattle at the front of the engine, I was wondering if I have to replace the timing chain to fix this? Could I just remove the guide? Does it (the guide) really need to be there??Could I just replace the tensoners? And what is the maximum or minimums that each of these procedures would cost

Thanks, any comments would be appreciated.

if you have a dohc you can just remove the top guide .it may already be broke. it is ok to discard it thats what was done on a nissan tsb in the past if it was found broke

It won't help if the tensioner is trashed already. Take the valve cover off to see if the top guide is broken just sitting and rubbing on the chain and tapping the valve cover, that might be the noise. Usually when that breaks your tension is usually bad but not in all cases.

the very top guide that goes over the two cams should not be replaced but just removed alltogether.
