I recently purchased this 98 Q45 from a doctor so all in all 95% clean as a whistle , always garaged at work and at home , non-smoker , dealer serviced and so on , anyway he could not start it at work and had it towed to a local garage , They had it for about 6 mnths inside unable to get it to run so I bought it and bypassed the fuel pump relay and drove it home in limp mode 25 miles air blowing ice cold , I got lucky on ebay and purchased an ecm with the exact numbers as mine and found out the ecm had to be flashed for my key so I limped it to the dealer to do that , They charged me $89.00 and it didnt take because they said the new or old ecm wont talk to their machine through the consult hookup and tell me I have 2 bad computers but they can sell me a new one for $2000.00 installed , I said no thanks I will limp it home and go from there - heres the kicker - they offer to take the car off my hands since I dont want to spend the money to repair it - do you think screw job or what , when I dod get it home what other options do I have or should I just part it out , would be a shame though as clean as it is , Please help before I make another wrong decision.

Don't make any rash decisions. Definitely get a second opinion from an Infiniti professional. Do not even consider buying a new ECM for $2000.00!!!

Where do you live? Maybe someone here can help you or recommend a place for you to go. I'm sure it can be resolved much easier than what they're telling you.

It's too bad that T3 Automotive is 5 hours away. Hang in there, someone should chime in soon.

Here's jltibbs info:

Ive never seen a bad ECU out of any 90-01 Q45 outside of people messing up a wiring issue and frying it

I would say your looking at a fuel pump or fuel pump controller.. If the engine runs at all even in limp mode, that means the ECU is working properly.. In my experience they are either 100% dead or 100% good!

Ive seen cars with the consult port not working properly, thats a much more likely cause than an ECU being bad.

You need to check some basic things, and I think we can help you. When you turn the key on with the fuel pump controller hooked up as it should be, does the fuel pump come on?

When you say it was in "limp mode", what does that mean? What was the car doing?

Sorry I skimmed you post...

Dealerships that refuse to do work using there entire a** (Instead of half a**) are a disgrace.

They would buy the car, bring it to there "Detailing shop" to shine it up and install a used ECM. Then they would just spend a couple of minutes making the ECU recognize the ignition key. After that they would turn around and sell it for a ridiculous amount.

I can't believe they had the audacity to charge you for work that didn't correct the problem because they hire incompetent technicians (Its a disgrace to even call them technicians) who don't know how to work with the Nissan Consult 2.

Whats the name of the dealership so I can make a list of dealers Infiniti owners should avoid. I have a local one high up on the list.

And unfortunately you need a Nissan Consult 2 to make the new ECU work with your key. No Laptop Consult emulator will work either as far as I know.

You might check with some of your local locksmiths. Many of the larger ones buy Consults just to deal with these key registry issues. They might be better than the dealer at this one particular operation, since that's all they do.

Ended up being a loose ground among a few other loose connections , I spent all day unplugging and plugging harnesses and tightening grounds and now all is well - car runs fine but the airbag and seatbelt lights flash thats all , so I say the stealership was doing me wrong what do you think ?

I say yes. Either they didn't do their job properly or they knew what they were doing :squint:. Some people just don't care or have a conscience.

I'm happy that you got it resolved the way you did :dblthumb:

Pretty much what I said, But I am biased because I have one local crappy dealer. They are supposed to be the best dealer around me ironically, Not as far as service or parts departments are concerned in my opinion.

Check the service manual on resetting the air bag light. If its like the G50 then open the drivers door with the ignition turned to the ON potion and press the door switch in and out 10 times in one minute, I think one minute. Worst that can happen is you trigger the drivers ejector seat and fall to the Earth again...I am kidding.

Thanks for the heads up on resetting the airbag light I will give it a try , I drove it yesterday all day for the first time and the tcs and slip lights come on and off intermitantly but I dont notice any change in how the car drives , which by the way these cars have some ba**s , Wow.
