Hmmms ok here's a quick test to try to explain my problem =) Next time you're out driving around in your manual 240, in 1,3,5 push your shifter as far forward as it goes, while the car is already in gear, and lightly tap the accelerator? Should my shift knob be moving back and forth when that happens? It seems to me like my 170k mile beast needs new engine and transmission mounts, but I want to be certain before I do anything ;) Also when I'm cruising around, the shifter is loose enough to cause some rattle from my weak 300w powered sound quality 12" sub. Any thoughts? (tightened the actual knob as far as I could ;))

with a 170k, motor mounts may be the case, probably a good idea to go ahead and go aftermarket, paid 230 for mine.the shifter movement may be coming from inside the transmission, a little worn out maybe.

It would be moving side to side. Try this -- In a safe area , try popping your hood. Fully engage the E-brake. Ease into gear lightly (if manual). You should actually be able to see the engine lift up in real time. Usually the driver side one goes bad. But I your case it might be the trans mount.
