I recently purchased a new 07 maxima sl and am right now experiencing what i feel is a problem. it was getting poor mileage and so took it into the dealer at 6500kms to see if there was a problem. i was willing to accept that it might take longer to break in, but they chose to advance the timing 2degrees. Now I have even worse mileage (12.1 l/100kms highway) and it feels like it has less power. Should I get the dealer to set the timing backwards 4degrees from where it is now? What could be the problem?BTW, i've seen performance specs on the web that says top speed is 149mph. is that true? I tried yesterday and can barely get past 130 on a downhill slope.

For one, the dealer should not have just changed the timing, especially if it is no longer a stock setting. The cars were made to run a certain way and if they had to change the stock timing to get it to run right, then something elsewhere is screwed up and they don't want to fix it.

I would try taking it to another nissan dealership for a diagnostic. Have them check everything out and ask them to check the timing to see if it is where it is supposed to be. After you get there results chances are that you can go back to the original nissan dealership and get them to fix the real problem. They should also reimburse you for the diagnostic fee.
