bad m30 transmission

I bought a 90 m30 last month, unfortunately. Prior owner forgot to say anything about impending tranmission failure. It won't upshift at all now after working fine for a few days. It will stay in whatever gear I start off in, but won't upshift at all, automatically, or manually.

I've done plenty of major BMW and Porsche work - but never owned an A/T before.

I will have a Nissan mechanic friend test it this weekend, but if it's bad and I need to replace the trans, what may be the cheapest way to get the car working again? If it were a BMW, I'd do a conversion to 5spd.

Will Pathfinder transmissions cross-fit? I can get one of those (92 v6) very cheap.

This car was supposed to be a spare, for when the old BMW's are getting worked on, and I don't want to spend much at all on it.

I'd appreciate any ideas you guys might have.

I think have heard that the transmission is common to the J30, 300zx and Pathfinder but I've never heard about someone swapping one into a J or M. These cars all have the VG series engine so maybe it is possible. To be sure, you'd have to check into the model numbers of the transmissions. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks. I will post whatever I find out.

There's several Nissan cars and trucks, and a few Mazdas that use the same base transmission. Gear ratios, wiring, and bellhousing aren't necessarily identical and I don't know which would be the best match yet. The 89 300Z appears to be a very close match, if not identical, on the outside. I'm leaning toward that, but also suspect the Mazda 929 may have similar gearing (though the bellhousing doesn't look quite identical)

Not being able to find detailed specs on the M30 trans is a nuisance though.
