I tried to smog my car the other day and failed for running rich. I pulled code 33 and 34 from the ECM, O2 and KS. Before I shell out for a new knock sensor, could it be triggering a code because of the noise caused by the timing chain guides? I have not got this taken care of yet, as it is only a TSB and should not be a serious fault to require a recall. The KS is kind of expensive and hard to replace and I need this thing to pass ASAP. It runs great as it is, and I get a solid 24 mpg on the highway, I'll be on cloud 9 if I replace these 2 and it starts getting even better mpgs. I appreciate the help.

quick question. does your car feel strong at any throttle input?

im pretty sure the obd1's diagnostics dont operate that way. they only throw a code when an area of interest is dead or shorted. the obd2's however read for caliberation as well. and actuall i dont even know which year car you have. so ya that could be doing it

If you're running rich, start with the O2 sensor and the coolant temp sensor.

if your car is running rich, it shouldn't trigger the knock sensor.

33 is obviously o2 sensoralso check ect

high HC- distributor cap and rotor, plugs, wires

After changing the O2 sensor (which was the cause of all the high readings) and the knock sensor, I went back for the test and barely failed in NOX at 15 mph. Just to see what a bad O2 can do,

Before: @ 15 mphHC - MAX 88 Meas. 272 CO - MAX .52 Meas. 8.38 NO - MAX 704 Meas. 89

After: @ 15 mphHC - MAX 88 Meas. 13 CO - MAX .52 Meas. .04 NO - MAX 704 Meas. 1030 So the typical thing happened, you fix one thing and then another one pops up. Now I have to get that NOX down, probably with the cat now that running rich for a while probably screwed it up.

I will test the coolant temp sensor before replacing it but its not throwing a code.

You went from running rich to running lean. I would check your EGR ports, ANY exhaust leak before the cat, and run SeaFoam or other FI cleaner.

Cone Junky and clss240, did both of those things. Also checked the EGR, and it is working as it should. CTS is within range too. I will replace the cat and see what happens.

As an update, passed smog today with the new cat. I got a stock exhaust with a new cat welded on for cheap NOX at 15 mph was 700 out of 704, so I just barely passed, but its not a letter grade. I did check for proper EGR function, but maybe cleaning out the tube and possibly a new valve would knock that number down.
