Well guys i got the new waterpump on...set the timing correct....and set tension to tight....needless to say i snapped the timing belt on start up and im sure i hve bent valves although the belt wrapped around the crank sprocket and didn't allow it to move for long. question is to rebuild or replace. hadn't opened the engine up but it already sounds more exspensive to replace valves/guides...whatever was damaged than just find a engine that someone was building and decided to go another route. suggestions/comments...i only have a week or two before i have to go back to work for about 8 months away from my car

Replace the belt and make sure the valves are bent. You'd be suprised, sometimes people get lucky.

I replaced the belt after it first broke it drove ok. I made 3hrs back to ga and do a drift event before it started really acting up. just skipped alot at idle but was fine in the revs....but i think because of all the violent motor vibrations it worked some other stuff loose and it sounds like i may have spun a bearing also. ima take it apart and if its not gonna be much over price of new engine i'll have it rebuilt

Same thing happened to me when I first put my motor in.......I tightened the belt to tight, it snapped when I tried to crank it. I thought it was a wiring issue, since I hadn't gotten it started yet, so I kept trying to crank it for several days, before I realized it wasn't the wiring, and was the belt. Replaced the belt, it fired right up....and runs fine over a year later.Did yours snap while the engine was running, or while you were cranking?

yeah it snapped while i was driving so it was a little more movement involved. i think thought the part of the pump in broke off under the crank gear wouldn't matter but i think its leaking and may have caused some oil starvation while i was driving it in ga
