alright everyone, here is the deal, i have a 98 240sx se w/about 64k right now. i have really bad gas mileage, in the 230-250 range on a tank. i get too scared to run it all the way to empty.i calculated how many miles per gallon from the receipt and it comes out to be 18-20. that is shifting at the highest 3k, and some freeway.
btw, how many gallons does the s14 tank hold? i usually fill up and get about 12 from the pump.
also i have a check engine light, i think it was from the crappy exhaust that is on the car. it is a straight pipe, no muffler, w/a tip welded on. there are holes in the welds that hold the tip.
the only mods that are on the car are : injen short ram, eibach sportlines, and that crappy exhaust. i just got new platinum plugs from the dealer and put those on. but i have yet to put my new distributor cap/rotor on.
im thinking about getting my timing chain done, and either tightening or taking off my heat shield because i think its rattling.

check engine light codes are emission related. Emissions are fuel control equipment. take care of the engine light and you will most likely take care of your fuel consumption problem. when you say straight pipe on your exhuast,is there no cat convertor either? The 96 and up cars have 2 o2 sensors. 1 in front of the cat and 1 behind. if the cat is gone your gonna get a cat efficency code(po420) this in itself will not effect your fuel milage since the rear o2 has no effect on fuel control ,it is there mearly to moniter cat efficency. you need to pull the codes and see what your getting and fix it before worring about fuel consumption.
