I just bought a used 2001 Xterra and noticed the gas cap was not the original so I went to Autozone and the guy there noticed that the gasket that goes around the hole was not there so the cap fit loosely. And also the whole base doesn't have a single screw so it appears as though they wrongly rebuilt that whole assembly. So apart from the fact that the gasoline is going to be evaportaing very quickly I may run into some other problems. What would be the best way to have this fixed? . . .

I would love to help you out. But to be honest, there aren't alot of Xterras or Frontiers on this forum for some reason. It's ironic because NICO is comparitively a high traffic site. You should ask here if you don't get any more replies, or even if you do... http://www.nissanoffroad.net there is lots of xterras and frontiers here.

Are you saying there's something wrong with the filler neck, or just that the cap that you saw at AutoZone doesn't appear to be a good replacement?

If you're looking for a new gas cap - an OEM one would be the best route - either from the dealership, one of our online sponsors like http://www.everythingnissan.com, or a salvage yard.

The filler neck is ok, around the filler neck goes the gasket which is missing. So that is why the gas cap doesn't fit snugly when it cliks.
