The backup lights on my '89 fastback are not functioning. I checked the fuses and the bulbs...they're fine.

What should I look at next?

I'm running a 91-93 redtop sr if it matters.

Thanks!

Most likely your mechanic didn't hook them up after the swap.

Did you do the swap yourself? Were your reverse lights ever working? Before/after swap?

did you hook up the reverse light sensor on the transmission?

I spoke to the mechanic who will be doing my swap yesterday...he said that few swaps have the reverse lights working on them. I hear its a real pain to deal with the wires and many people just don't bother.

I bought the car with the engine in there already.

Hmm, how do I access the sensors and wires on the transmission? Please elaborate!

I never looked at my transmission up close and personal before btw. I'm learning more and more about my car by the day.

Unless you're confident in your skillz, I'd say you're gonna need to ask someone.

If you bought the car with the SR, the lights probably didn't work after the swap. Where are you located?

I'm from southern california. My profile now reflects this =D.

But yes, I'm very confident with wiring. I've messed with ecu wires before so anything else now seems less daunting. As for mechanical parts, I'm "semi"-confident. But with good instructions, I'm not afraid.

Do I need to jack up the car and look for something?

i'm trying to remember the plug that has the reverse lights on it. Don't quote me on this, but it should be a grey plug next to the battery fuse box. It should be a green/white and a green/blue wires that connect to the reverse sensor (no polarity, btw) The sensor is on the passenger side of the transmission. Check to see if it's just two wires hanging there. Mine weren't hooked up either, but that was because my mechanic forgot to hook them up (all his other SR swaps have reverse lights, btw). I told him to tell me the wires and i'd hook them up myself, but stupid me didn't write down which wires. go fig.

Yes tenkawa_akito, now we're starting to get into some meaty details that I really need...

So, the reverse sensor from the transmission has a harness that extends somewhere near the battery, yes?

Now, what should the reverse sensor plug connect to?

the reverse sensor has two wires. Mine are just dangling for the time being until I remember what wires to splice. I'll call up my mechanic this afternoon and find out which wires need to be attached.

ok. here's the pinout, i believe. NISTECH's pic was too small, so i dusted my FSM off and looked it up (darn you!)

Next to the fuse box on the passenger side of the engine bay should be three harness connectors. You want the second one (not sure of color as my car is buried in snow right now, but I believe it's brown) The wires you're looking for are Green/White and Green/L (i have no idea what L is, but I always thought it was a plain green wire) Disconnect them from the plug and have a friend stand behind the car as you touch the ends together to complete the circuit. If the wires are the right ones, the backup lamps will come on. Then just run some wire from the reverse sensor (it's the closest to the engine bay on the passenger side of the transmission) to those wires. Polarity doesn't matter in this case cause all you're doing is allowing for a circuit to be completed.

Sorry For thread jack:

Mine are none functioning but i drive a 89 with a KA, i belive where the connecters are suppose to go the idiot who owned the car previously chopped em, prolly when he changed the clutch disc. they are dissconnected how would i go about respliceing them together?

heres a pic if your interested in looking:http://images.fotopic.net/?id=2492314

First of all ...Ewww... that thing is spewing gear oil... replace the switch and the connector will come with it. just plug it in. the switch can be a bear to get out unless you have a special socket for it. typically a 19mm 6 pt socket will work to take it out. put it in with a 19mm wrench.

This maybe late, but my reverse light weren't working either, so I checked the transmission plug, and one of the wires was ripped of the connector. I stripped the wire long enough to wrap it around the connector, and put the rubber boot back on. Works perfect, not problems. The SR should have the same plug.

you could get a voltage tester and test it. Or even a little basic light tester would work. Or put it up on jacks, have someone put it in reverse, and touch wires.

on the switch it doesnt matter which way they go it is an open circuit /closed circuit switch. all the switch does is short those to wires together when the shifter is put in reverse.

that makes sense....no it doesn't! :) L shouldn't equal sky blue.

if you have an owners manual. look in the genral section which labels all the different colors. I agree with your observation though. it makes no sense at all.
