Need to carry a backup key in my wallet. I just got a 2014 rogue sv and it seems that the only
way to do this is to remove the battery from the one of the fobs and and remove the key
and carry the key only in my wallet. Think this will be safe????? Thanks for any comments. :)

Thanks for the response. I have no problem with a key in my wallet. It has saved me when I got locked out too many times. ha. Anyway, I can't leave one in the car and have another one in my pocket for normal use. I think I can take the battery out of the spare which will make the spare unuseable and store it somewhere and put the key from the spare in my wallet. (its a small key).

In 1995 I purchased a new 1995 Saturn SL1.... one thing I always thought was cool was they gave you a credit card sized (a little thicker than a CC) thing that had a key cut out but was attached.... so you kept it in your wallet and if you needed it you just pushed the key part out and you could open your doors. I don't remember if it would actually start it or not. I'm sure others did this too, but it's the only car I've ever purchased that had something like this.

I think it is a smart idea.

That is it! :mike I should have kept it longer.... had it for almost 4 years and 80,000 miles when I thought I needed something bigger and better (that's what happens when you turn 20), ahhhh the 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue was next up..

You cannot lock your key inside the Rogue (just like any of Nissan's cars equipped with the Smartkey system). The Rogue will prevent the car from locking and beep at you a few times.

Problem solved?

Had a backup key made at Canadian Tire (flat metal.) It gets me in the door at least, which is usually the problem as the doors lock randomly!

My 2013 Rogue randomly locks up and doesn't beep or anything to warn you. I had a blank key cut to get in the door in emergencies.

You have a vehicle that's under full warranty. Have you taken it to the dealership to fix the problem?

Yes, I had one cut at Canadian Tire. Works to unlock the drivers door.

I keep the fob with battery removed in the glovebox and a spare key (made at Ace Hardware) in a hide-a-key on the car

btw, I tried putting the fob with battery installed in an rf blocking case and then in the glove box. It didn't work, was just to close to receiver.

My 2015 Rogue Select has randomly locked on me for such things as going back into the house for something after inserting the key in the ignition and shutting the driver's door. I just went to Ace Hardware, had a spare plain key made and laminated it with the plastic sheet you use for cards and such. Key works fine for unlocking the doors.

BTW, I stopped in at the dealership and talked to the service manager about the recurring random locking issue and he claimed they had never heard of the problem...I asked him to consult the Rogue forum and gave him the link.

Many cars now have an auto re-locking feature where if you unlock the doors by hitting the button on the fob and then you do not enter the vehicle for X amount of time (usually 30, 60, or 90 seconds, depending on the vehicle) the doors will re-lock absent any other action on your part. I've noticed this happen on my 2013 Rogue SV with intelligent key, but on my vehicle it was working as designed. I unlocked the doors from 30 feet away as I was talking to someone, then tried to open the door five minutes later and the whole car was locked.

I would think your vehicle with a standard chip key that has to be inserted in order to start the engine would have been programmed to deactivate the auto re-locking feature if the key is actually inserted into the ignition. I guess you can't fix stupid, and engineers who try to get too cutesy and fancy with these special new features are flat out dumb.

I can't stand that the glove box doesn't lock. Without a separate trunk and without a locking glove compartment, there's no secure area of the vehicle to lock stuff in when using valet parking. I hate valet parking anyway, but I especially avoid it with this vehicle. Not that I have anything valuable, but I don't like people randomly going through my stuff. And they all do if they can.
