Backup camera alignment

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

After driving my EX for about 9 months, I noticed that the backup camera was showing a portion of the bumper along the bottom of the screen. It looks like an angled silver band taking up about 2-3% of the screen. I thought I had knocked the camera a bit out of whack because I had just shut the hatch door with a little more force than usual and in all the months I'd had the car, I seriously never noticed that band before. I had the dealer look at it when I brought the car in for service and he showed me the screen in another EX, exact year and model as mine and sure enough, there it was. He said it's normal. And given the evidence, I guess he's right. Maybe my eyesight's improving with old age, haha, but it made me curious.

I figure with 100s of EX owners here, I could get a pretty definitive survey and see if I really was missing something all those months. So if you could please reply and let me know if your backup camera shows a view of the bumper along the bottom, I'd really appreciate it. TIA.

Yup, I had the same question and same response. I think it makes sense since I think it's a fish eye effect going on with the lens.

I noticed exactly the same thing on my 9 month old EX35 (2010). I brought it to the dealer who said it was normal. I swear that it was "even" before. I did touch the camera trying to open the trunk, and perhaps i moved it. Anyone else noticed that phenomena? Perhaps it is normal and I would like to know as well.

I think this makes 3 owners who has this happening

Funny that I never noticed that but mine is the same. I have a fairly clear view of the rear stainless bumper protector. My EX is a 2011 with 1800 miles and 6 months old. Looks like a normal issue.

Thanks for replying, guys. It looks like I'm not crazy after all, just a little slow. So far it's unanimous that the view of the bumper is normal.

Anyone who's camera doesn't show the bumper at the bottom of the screen? It's really obvious once you notice it and you'll probably always notice it once you do.

I had to make a trip to the dealer and asked about the camera again. They checked into it and adjusted it this time. I still see a small sliver of the bumper, but not like it was before. So, yeah, they can adjust it. And IMO just because other cars on the lot show it, it doesn't mean that it is adjusted properly. Not a big deal, but thought I'd update what I did.

Thanks, Red. I might get mine adjusted too. I have more than a sliver showing, more like 1/2". Do you know if they adjusted it with the computer? Hands-off, so to speak.

My wife took it in and she did mention that they did it with a computer. They had never done it before, so it was a learning process for them.
I do know that one can get to a menu to adjust the cameras, but I thought it was for the all around view ones- not sure about the back up one- is it the same camera? I may check it out this weekend. Doing it that way is more trial and error as one just adjusts the numbers and looks to see what is changed. I have no idea what hooking it up to a comp does.

As a side not, it looks like the maps on the nav are about 5 degrees or so out of line. Only the maps- not the other info one sees in the nav view. Maybe it was like that all along, but my wife noticed it. I'll look first hand Friday, when she gets home, but from the pics she sent it looked off. Maybe I'll just have to get used to other views where up is the direction one is heading in- vs N. Then I won't see it.

Thanks for the intel RedwinGV. I just looked at mine again and it's more like an inch of bumper at the bottom of the screen which is kind of annoying so I might take it in and ask for an adjustment. It was the guy at the dealer's who told me they did it with the computer so they've probably done it before or at least know about it.

I haven't seen any menu item to adjust the rear view camera but I haven't really looked for it either. I'll check the manual to see if there's anything in there. I'm sure you know the around view uses four cameras, one on each corner, and it makes sense they might have to be adjusted occasionally, hence the menu item.

Since you said it's a side note, I assume you're not suggesting adjusting the rear view camera had any effect on the maps in the nav. Correct?

Just so we're on the same page, do you have just the rear view camera, or the four around view cameras?

Hold the "settings" button and spin the volume knob about 40 clicks. A new menu will come up. Proceed with caution so you don't adjust something you didn't mean too. :ohno: This isn't in the manual.
Yes I have around view. I don't know if there are 2 cameras in back or not. Wife not home yet.

And I doubt the rear view camera had any affect on the maps, but I don't know what they adjusted or what the computer interface did when they adjusted that rear view. So, I just don't know if it changed or it was that way before we brought it in.

@RedwinGV - Hey, thanks, I finally got a chance to check that out. Interesting submenus there with diagnostics and other settings. I upped the setting on my bluetooth speaker to high just for the hell of it. I played with the settings for the backup camera a bit and they all seemed to be for the warning lines, didn't see anything that would adjust the angle of the camera. But I can live with it the way it is; I really only use it to check if anything's behind me before I back up. I still stick with the visual eyeball look-around that I'm used to after year of not having a backup camera.
