Hello All,

I figured I'd update the RB world with what I've been up too... I've had some real rough history with my built RB's in the past... some very unfortunate incidents that resulted in lost built motors, lots of hard work, time and money... The last my car ran was in March of 2009... and I put down the wrenches and said screw cars for a long while. It wasn't until last fall (2011) that I decided to do an RB30 build which in my opinion is the ultimate RB.. RIPZ is part of the inspiration with their bad a** RB30 skyline builds.. so I figured why not. I ended up importing 2 Rb30 short blocks for the AU... only took about 3 months to arrive and huge custom fees later...no the second block is not for sale.. its a spare. :)

Anyways I'll let the pics speak for themselves, you can find more at the link at the bottom.

Blocks Arrive.. what a headache getting these things here...

Custom Clutch Fan!

Best mod to date btw... what a tight fit though with the 2" Fluidyne... had to trim the fan blades and also reverse the clutch so it fits.. Temps stay a very cool 180-185

Had to cut hood reinforcements
Image

I also made custom pucks that are 7/8" of an inch tall with the McKinney Mounts... pan is about 1/16" of an inch off the cross member... doesn't get any lower.. ground the front cam cover as well.. still have a tiny dent in my hood.. The RB30 is a huge motor I didn't realize its size until I dropped it in.. very big.

I didn't take pics of them, but I made my own sway bar adapters cost me about $15.00 in aluminum and used the mill at work.

I do want to note that the Z32 N/A clutch package pilot bearing does not fit in an rb26 flywheel.. the ID is right the OD is not correct. Luckily my place of work as a lathe I was able to use to machine down the OD and allow for a ~0.006" press fit.. a small oversight that almost put me a week behind. (Very tough to build a car when you work full time and go to college full time.. every weekend moment is very important time)

Polished Up after collecting 2 years of nasty rain water, leaves, acorns... ect ect

I'll work on body alignment when I'm not feeling lazy... the front could be a lot better.. but for now I dont care.

Big Brake Upgrade

DBS 350z track rotors, Carbotech XP8 pads, R33 calipers .. stops very very hard... locks up the brakes extremely easy even at highway speeds if not careful.

Overall I am pretty happy thus far with the swap, the car has about 1000 miles on it, the motor is well broken in and no mechanical issues to speak of as far as the rotating assembly is concerned. I currently have an occasional high rpm break up with the LS1 coils (70k miles on them) as they seem to get heat soaked.. I'm upgrading to LS2 truck coils to hopefully cure this. I am also RPM limited to 6500 right now since I've got a pretty serious boost creep issue. The tial v44 is set to 11 psi with a spring.. however the gate opens at 14 psi and creeps slowly till I hit the boost cut set at 20 psi which happens at 6500... The manifold waste-gate setup is lacking and is not seeing proper flow with the added ~0.3-.4 liters of displacement over my last setup. I'll fix this as well eventually.. even short shifting at 6500 the torque of the RB30 is just awesome.. I'm seeing the gate open about 3900 rpms.

Basic Mods

***Quick Video I made with the Go-Pro

No timing in the motor yet only ~9-10 degrees in boost... (will be 15-17 once tuned on a dyno - car is missing 100-150 hp)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb5NJrxggMU*****

I'd like to thank a few people who made this possible (these arn't sponsors just people who have awesome hearts and extremely helpful), without the help of my loving cousin Cody I'd still be working on this car tonight, its tough to do everything yourself and an extra set of hands are priceless... Howard at Boardman Engine, Kyle@Dei-Pro Tuning, my machinist buddy Matt (excellent crank work), John Zuz for helping me get my Rb25 manifold to work on a 26 head. Thank you all.

Hope you enjoy, nothing like the scream of an RB.. its nice just to drive the stupid girl again.

Damn nice man. I'm running a 6262 .58 T4 on my 25DE/30 setup. I'd be happy for it to drive like yours.

Thanks all for the kind words, it took a lot for me to consider spending more time and money on another built RB.. but in the end I had to. Its been worth it thus far, I just wish this crap weather would go away so I can daily my 240 now.. its been raining 90% of the time for the last month here in NE Ohio... ET streets do not work in pooling/puddling water, I might as well be on ice skates.

ST240: I'm sure your rb30 will hit hard on that turbo, I was very surprised how quickly my car spools the 67mm, I make boost sub 3k rpms.. its great for cruising.

Ricky IDK about the Dragon, I just read the thread it sounds like a good time, I've never had my singled RB run longer than ~3-4 weeks.. I'll give it another month before I decide hahaa. It would be nice to have a large RB meet, I know we had one last year I think.. I was pretty bummed mine wasn't able to make it. Nothing liking having some Rare Bread all together at the same time. :chuckle:

For those that didn't see it, I have a video posted at the bottom of my original post at the top of this thread.

Once I get my occasional ign break up sorted out and maybe find a quick/bandaid solution for my creep issue I'll head to the dyno to add timing and dial fuel. I might hit the track before that to get a trap speed reading.. I'm curious to where its sitting right now. (tried last week, but it was canceled....)

I'm hoping my transmission makes it through the summer, a few years back I had someone "refresh" it with new brass.. however it was returned to me in worse condition that I gave it to them... it grinds and I generally have to slam it into gear.. I get pissed every time it does it...

Curiuos how your LS coil issue works out.

I did the LQ9 coils (they really arent LS2 coils) on my 26 setup a few weeks ago and never really got on it until I went to a dyno day over this last weekend.

I had the plugs gapped a little higher (.023 versus what I originally run of .019) with the AEM LQ9 dwell settings. Once I got to full boost The car was falling on its face, I was in the car on the dyno and you could feel the mis-fires.

I'm going to bump the gap back down to .019 and if that doesnt fix it, the stock coils will be going back on, because they never once gave me a fit

The D585 coils? Thats not very inspiring.... I've seen some people rave about them. Were yours new or old? I currently have my plugs gapped at 0.021" on the LS coils.. I might be able to test the D585's Friday morning weather permitting... If not next week. (beer vacation over the weekend)

What gage wire do you have on yours? I've got two 16 gage for the power (1 wire per 3 coils) and two 16 gage for the ground (1 wire per 3 coils) at the transmission. I have my dwell set at 5.5 ms on the LS1's.. was hoping I could use around 4.0 ms on the D585's.

Yep, D585's

From my understanding they have ran well in cars up past 1000RWHP. These were used......however I have a hard time believing they'll degrade that much in performance (considering my RB coils were twice the age and still working great)

I believe I ran 18 gauge (could be 16, cant remember) to each individual coil off of the stock power wire from the RB harness (driven off the IGN relay) I do know the wire that I used was slightly larger than the wire coming off the OEM pigtail on the coils.

AEM told me to run 6ms on the LQ9 coils at a minimum, and have the ability to go up to 8 as a max

I gapped the plugs down last night to .018-.019 from the 22-23 I had them at. I'm really hoping that'll make up the difference. I remember in my testing years ago that there was a huge difference in that kind of gap with the stock coils.

If the weather holds I'm taking it to the track friday evening for a 'midnight mayhem' program, and then after that its beer-thirty for the remainder of the weekend......kinda sick of working on cars!

When my miss-fire started it was around 5400 when gapped at 0.32.. after knocking that back I was able to rev higher. I've heard LS-1 coils being able to handle over 150whp per plug at ~25psi+ of boost.. so I was also taken back that they were breaking up. I do wonder however how much hotter an RB engine bay runs than other engine applications. I feel like my RB's engine bay gets wayyy hotter than my WRX's... I know the HP diff between the two are quite large.. but IDK. I looks like my testing wont happen till next week.. I feel you on being burnt out on wrenching.. I wont be touching any tools but a bottle opener all weekend. ;)

UPDATE!:

Had some issues with this initial build... had a unnoticed coolant leak and tighter than desired ring gap. Ended up having to rebuild the initial RB30...(pistons expanded, rings butted dug into walls.. made a bit of a mess) Built this one myself along with Kyle @ DeiPro Tuning, and it came out very well. The motor was put together about 2 weeks ago, had made 528whp on Friday. It currently sits with around 400 very hard miles on it and is driving, and holding up very well. I'm very happy with how its running. I was able to weight my car last night completely full weight, gas, fluids the works sits in at 2940lbs. A little heavier than I wanted, but its still a pretty good full weight.

Video of the dyno plus a little after dyno bonus:

I'm very happy with how its sitting right now, car moves out pretty well. Plans are to hit the track this week see what kind of trap it can bring home. Thanks for looking, hope you enjoy.

Nice set up! What transmission and rear ratio are you running? I have the 25det 5 spd and a 3:7 rear. It needs the 4:11 I have put up...

Stock rb25 transmission with an R33 diff ratio is 4.10. It works ok, I'm heading to the track tonight I'll see how my 4th gear rpm holds out.

Not using anti-lag at all yet, 1st pass was my best. Car moved out pretty good and I was happy with its time at 11.79@128mph. Gearing is about perfect with its current setup hitting the traps with around ~150-200rpm to spare in 4th (7k redline)

Well quick update on my car for everyone.

I decided about 8 weeks ago to build a new exhaust. I felt like my old 3" was restricting my RB30 a bit.. especially since it was crush bent and some parts had cross sections around ~2.5 inches.. not good for flow especially at my power level.

So my cousin and myself made our own 3.5" turbo back, I didn't get a shot of the downpipe.. that was the best looking piece. Very very tight squeeze between my manifold, steering column and firewall.. but it has around 1/16 to 1/8" between itself and the 3 objects.

Heres a shot of the new 3.5 inch.. its just mild steel the whole exhaust cost me about $300 and 6 hours of my time. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, my lowest part is 3.75" of ground clearance that's at the Vband clamp..

Image

I broke my shifter last week racing a local cammed C6, he dynoed ~450whp and just ran a 11.42@127 last weekend. I had a 270lb anchor in my car along with me, he had is skinny gf in his..

Vid from his car:

During that race I actually broke my shifter...

Image

Shifter bushing at the base snapped off going into 4th.. was a very very weird feeling.. I actually was wondering if I snapped something more. Anyway.. some delron dowel rod and some lathe action later all fixed up!

Image

I've got about 4000 miles on my motor since its been last rebuilt, just pulled the plugs last week they look awesome! no oil residue, no speckles, they looked great. Timing marks are right at the apex like they should be.. very happy with this build. My only issue is that during a long pull 1st - beginning of 5th... I'll dump oil out of my valve cover seal/breathers... my head is filling with oil and its not flowing back down to the sump. I will be installing a head vent for next year to my sump to put crank case pressure into my cylinder head allowing the oil to flow back down the standard drains into the sump... The problem is REAL I believe it now 100%.. however I didn't expect to see it at my power levels. It became noticeable after I added my new exhaust (more power being made more hurricane in the sump).

I did make it to the track last weekend, ended up running my best times yet! Also found out I need more gear now... cracking the limiter ~100-150' before the finish right now. Will be adding a 3.69 Q45 diff for next year since I refuse to rev my motor any higher than 7200 (I'd like to make it last for a while - revs kill). I was a bit bummed however my 275/40/17 ET streets were a bit too worn to squeek me out my goal of 130 mph trap on pump 93... but all is good...

Here is the vid:

Plans for next year:
Head vent - for sure
3.69 Q45 rear end - for sure
Possible 6766 upgrade
5 Bar MAP external
Plan to run e85 no matter what turbo and lay on another 5-8 psi (shooting for 650-700whp)
New ET streets mine are destroyed

Thanks for looking! Car will be hibernating soon as the weather is slowly going to hell here....
