b4 getting tires from tirerack, need final opinions please

hello, i have been reading reviews, surveys, definitions on each and every tire possible, since this is my first experience wiht getting new tires i dont want it to be a mistake. my 1995 240sx se has 205/55/16's and instead of listing all my choices down, what would guys recomend for under $90 ? also, since it does rain heavy here in north cali, and i want to drive aggresive in the rain, should i get all seasons or could summer tires still be ok?

prioritys

1. mountain (wet or dry)2. drift practice3. auto x

under 90 dollars?

cripes... the es-100 or kumho ecsta MX would both be solid choices in that size for the price. those would be the best bang-for-buck tires in that size and price IMO.-chet

ok the kumho ecsta MX's look good, i dont know what the es-100's are though. what do u think about the kumho ecsta MS's vs. the continental ContiExtremeContact vs. the yokohoma AVS ES100 ??

oh yeah, i mainly drive in dry and wet, but on road trips in snow, could any of these tires hang?

No, you're asking too much of the tire. You set a price point pretty low, so you can only expect so much return on your investment.

There are dedicated winter tires, and summer performance tires, and in between, there's the "all season" designated tire.

There is a compromise to deal with here. The priorities you list are opposite of one another, because you're planning on grip driving and drifting...polar opposites. Best bet IMO is that es-100, learn/test the limits of adhesion, but use caution in less than ideal driving conditions.

what are the es-100's please? thanks for the info, your points are correct. i have to take that into consideration.

I just had a revalation the other day. My sister's boyfriend told me a friend of his is a distributor for Kuhmo and got him some tires fairly cheap. Coincidentally, I need some new tires. I really never gave Kuhmo's much thought, but U checked them out. The Ecsta MX appears to be a very good tire for the price. It was almost as good as the BFG KD's all around, actually braked better and had significantly better wet traction compared to the KD accorind to a comparison test on the Tire Rack site. I read the reviews and it's about the same as most other tires in it's class. Smae complaints of noise and wear. No biggie. 220 treadwear is not terrible for that type of tire. The only review that concerned me was one about the tire not holding up well at tracks. But I must take that with a grain of salt since I don't know if maybe the driver just sucked. In any case, these tires are quite affordable. I just looked and the 205/55-16 is only $88.

Grant, care to chime in here? I haven't heard much about these tires myself. But if I can get it cheap enough, I'll probably get them just to get them. I doubt I'll have my car long enough to truly evaluate them though.

Wow, useless post alert.

Anyways... after a convo w/ Grant about those MX's I think I am going to try them out as well. For the price you can't really beat them.

And to truly post whore it, now I'll go so far as to actually post something somewhat relevant. ;)

Before I fell in love with my Bridgestone Portenza SO3's, I went through a couple of less expensive, Z-rated performance tires. The first was the Yokohama AVS Intermediates. I'm not sure if they still make those anymore, it sounds like the ES-100's might be the modern day replacement. I liked the AVS' because they lasted for a long while compared to other Z-rated tires, and they were predicable when they let go.

Other than the Yoko's, I've also used Dunlop SP8000's. I think they were a little better than the Yoko's. They seemed to squeel a bit more at the limit, giving me a better sense of when they were going to let go. The Yoko's just kind of went, and recovered nicely. The Dunlops let you know what was coming.

The Kumho would be the best overall in that price range and size for dry and wet traction. The Continental Extreme Contact is an all season and not even close for dry handling. The AVS ES 100 is better wearing but not nearly as sticky as the MX.
