B14 sentra trunk won't open

hey guys, just looking for a little help, the trunk release on the car next to the driver seat will not open the trunk anymore. the same lever is used for the gas cap by pressing it down, and that works fine, but when pulled up to release the trunk it wont open the trunk anymore. trunk does open with the key. I'm thinking it might be the cable got stretched with time, it is a 97 model, anyone know how i would check or tighten it? thanks for anything

check the hatch release on the truck side, ummm.....steal cables really dont stretch dude....otherwise the brooklyn bridge would be under water.

thanks for the tip man, looks like you were right, after close inspection I found that the latch on the trunk side was a little bent and out of shape got another from the wreckers for 5 bucks, swapped it on and it did the trick, case anyone else is having or haves the same problem in the future.
