Hello I own a 1996 Nissan sentra gxe 1.6l that I have been using for years as a daily! 35-40 mpg! FTW!

So recently something bad happen

When I turn on the car and put it in drive it loses its power!

It accelerates very slow! It those get up to speed but very slow!

I floor it and the engine gos vrooooom! But it doesn't accelerate any faster.

It has fresh clean oil, new oil filter, new spark plugs, new fuel filter, air filter, distributor cap and plug wires,

What the heck?

Mechanic said it could be the MAF sensor. Got a new one and still same problem.

Any help? Any ideas?

It has over 160k I had the car for many years and I really hate to junk it.

Mechanic could say it needs a new Flux Capacitor, does not mean I will go out looking for one.

1. Is it Misfiring? or it idles fine and revs fine, but car won't go?

2. Is MIL on?

3. If so, have you scanned it?

4. Get a new mechanic, NEVER purchase ANYTHING without diagnosing your vehicle.

Is it an automatic or stick (you said drive i would assume auto)
Is your CEL ( Check Engine Light) on?
Are all plug wires FIRMLY connected?
When was the last time you changed/checked/flushed your transmission fluid?
The other thing is that your distributor itself could be going out. Given the very vague description of your issue it could be a few different things.
I own a nissan with the 1.6l and have ran into just about every issue thinkable and alot of times the fixes are quite simple
