My new B&M shifter shifts beautiful, needs push-down for reverse, <every> shift is perfect, very direct and quick..Got a greta deal on it too and nearly free install (while I was waiting on parts for a seperate issue)

But....I get this weird grinding noise whenever the clutch pedal is not depressed ( ie at all times ,except while shifting between gears).

When in Neutral, i push in clutch pedal and noise goes away.

When in first, second third ( maybe other gear too but harder to hear due to speed) there is a grinding noise..

Is it installed incorrectly and destroying my tranny?I was warned extra noise would be present but didnt expect a grind maybe a clunk?

Fred..

Fed, B+M shifters are metal on metal, I would not be suprised if you get some extra noise and whanot fro it when the gear are spinning (lcutch is engaged)..I had it far worse on my S13...

What do you mean by grinding? It sounds like to me you are hearing the throw out bearing. When you are at idle you hear like a spining raspy noise right? Then when you slightly push on the clutch pedal it goes away correct? I dunno few thoughts.

yeah thst springy rasy noise wasnt there before and now its there all the time until the noise of the wind at high speeds or the rattle drown it out.

The rattles is so bad at first when I heard it I was lookign around for big diesel trucks jake braking near me..

Butch:

N;.Grding npoise seems to normal and associated with this ( and many other) short shift kits.

But the ratle I think I may be able to address by going to another kit ( or back to stock)

I had a really bad rattle when I first installed my short shifter (B&M) in an s13, but I was using one of those crappy alan wrench screw type universal knobs because my stock one was broken. I replaced it with one of the B&M universal types that actually have threads recently, and there's almost 0 rattling now.

Also, I think the source of the rattling is down where those pins are on the ball joint. It seems that they don't fit flushly with the grooves and so they probably rattle against it sometimes. You could try putting some liquid gasket on the pegs, letting it cure, and then breaking them free from it, so they'd have a sort of rubbery coating on them. I'd imagine that would probably alleviate the rattle.

Good news.My rattle is finally fixed! A loose bolt had made it much worse!

Interesting, was it one of the bolts that holds the short shifter in place? I have that whinning noise on my S14, but above 5k it becomes a rattle can too. I would prefer a quieter more precise shift. It is very precise now, just seems noisier than I would have guessed it would be.

Yeah it's the "revised (no vibration)"version of the B&M model for the 95 240sx, but it still makes noise. I’ve given it plenty of time to break-in. I’ll have to go back and see what torque settings I used, maybe one of the six isn’t tight enough. Who diagnosed your loose bolt?

Yeah, I knew about KA noises before I even thought about replacing it and figured I'd do it anyway. So you know the phrase "buyer beware". I think that you can minimize the noises when you install it by a couple of quick modifications with at die grinder. I disassembled mine and it is much quieter after the changes I made to it. But all the bolts are tight and it still whines when decelerate and more so in 2nd and 4th. It almost just amplifies the sounds coming through my subframe and aluminum bushings from the dif.

Tranny's will develop "gear lash" when worn, that's why mine made the sound in my S13...why are you complaining about noise if you put alluminum bushings in the diffy?

Oh well, good to hear you got it better -Chet
