I have had both the 1st gen and 2nd gen B&M shifter installed and used for several months on my S14. Yes, the reduced shifting throws and solidity of the B&M is top notch.
However ... I noticed absolutely no improvement in the "noise/buzzing" issues between the two. I have completely dismantled and re-assembled both and concluded that it is a number of things in the design of these units that contribute to the noises.
First is the metal-to-metal construction of the springs that assist in the tight feeling of the shifter. I determined that the shifter rod will vibrate violently on top of the springs which it is housed with during heavy throttle , especially annoying above 4K rpm. Design flaw? I think so.
Second is the aluminum shift rod ... it acts as a megaphone for all internal transmission noises that may be normal, yet seems like your transmisson now has marbles rattling around in it. Some say, and so does B&M, that adding lead wheel weights below the counter-balance solves this ... it didn't. If you look closely at the Nissan OEM shifter, the counter-weight is filled with some sort of deadening material (delrin, rubber, whatever).
Lastly is the transmission itself ... it's not very quiet to begin with, so amplification doesn't help.
I put the stock shifter back in and have never been happier. BTW, my 2nd gen B&M shifter is for sale and unlike the fiasco I've seen with a certain sale, mine is readily available for the first offer ... $160 shipped in the continental USA.
