I installed several new parts this weekend and took my car for a test drive and heard this rattling. I thought it was the timing chain guide rattling due to new oil that I am using, but I'm almost positive it's coming from the shifter. I didn't reinstall that gasket that goes between the transmission and shifter, but just used gasket sealant instead. Is the rattling due to the missing gasket or because B&M shifters just rattle? It only really does it between 20-40mph.

Its the B&M shifter..mine is the same exact way and if u search you would find that many others have the same problem...its normal for it to rattle..the shifting is amazingly short but that rattling does get annoying

The shifting throw is reduced a lot, it's amazing the first time you drive the car after you installed the shifter. You basically just flick your wrist and you've shifted. But like everyone says, is the reduced throw worth the dam* buzzing noise to you? I don't really care, so it's worth it to me.

My rattles in high rpm ranges like a mother****, hardly notice it just gives a very slight humm in normal driving conditions, my passangers don't even notice.

I just got one of the "new" b&M Shifters, and yes they rattle. Mostly during 1st and 2nd gears. However, I noticed that mostly during 2nd gear acceleration it whistles quite loudly. Kinda annoying, but the thing kicks ***. If anyone knows a fix for the whistling lemme know

Isn't there a rubber boot thing that goes around the stock shifter? I've never tried this, but could you modify that to go around the B&M. It seems to me like all that's happened is the shifter is actually just vibrating up against the transmission housing (or something) between the boot and the transmission. People are getting different sounds, though they all seem to stem from vibration. Might be worth a try for one of you that's got the shifter. Take off the boot and drive it to see if it's vibrating there or what. Then decide what to do from there. PEACE. Tek.

I think that is mainly so stuff doesn't fall in your transmission. Like dirt etc.~ANDREW~

The B&M shifter has a rubber boot over ther internals of the shifter and I reinstalled the boot that bolts to the floor of the car. So it's not from missing parts, it's just that the shifter must rattle about the transmission or something. But it's not as annoying now, so I don't care.

to get rid of the humming/vibration, my friend just put some sealent (something that would seal two metal contacts), then scrwed it back in. So far, no humming / vibration

I put sealant on mine too. I put it where the original gasket would have been.

What is the sealant called? If you ever had to take the shifter back out can it be easily removed again?

I just used RTV gasket sealant. You just just yank the shifter and it will come right off.

I have had both the 1st gen and 2nd gen B&M shifter installed and used for several months on my S14. Yes, the reduced shifting throws and solidity of the B&M is top notch.

However ... I noticed absolutely no improvement in the "noise/buzzing" issues between the two. I have completely dismantled and re-assembled both and concluded that it is a number of things in the design of these units that contribute to the noises.

First is the metal-to-metal construction of the springs that assist in the tight feeling of the shifter. I determined that the shifter rod will vibrate violently on top of the springs which it is housed with during heavy throttle , especially annoying above 4K rpm. Design flaw? I think so.

Second is the aluminum shift rod ... it acts as a megaphone for all internal transmission noises that may be normal, yet seems like your transmisson now has marbles rattling around in it. Some say, and so does B&M, that adding lead wheel weights below the counter-balance solves this ... it didn't. If you look closely at the Nissan OEM shifter, the counter-weight is filled with some sort of deadening material (delrin, rubber, whatever).

Lastly is the transmission itself ... it's not very quiet to begin with, so amplification doesn't help.

I put the stock shifter back in and have never been happier. BTW, my 2nd gen B&M shifter is for sale and unlike the fiasco I've seen with a certain sale, mine is readily available for the first offer ... $160 shipped in the continental USA. :)

oh yeah... the lead wheels weights. i remember when my dad got his b&m shifter for his c5 vette he asked me to get him some lead wheel weights (i worked at a body shop at the time). i asked whay they were for and he said to put on his shifter. i guess the vette guys are/were having the same problem... his never did make any noise though. ill have to ask him more about it.

ok, i talked to my dad and he said the reason for the wheel weights on his c5 shifter was to dampen noise. try it out. he used 3 of them at the base of the shifter. make sure to get the wheel weights that attatch to the inside of the rim by adhesion. and there was no noise coming from his shifter.

I Had the same problem, I associated the humming/rattling with the weight of the shift knob that the B&M comes with. I cahnged to a light weight MOMO and I have had no problems since.

how good are the Pilot shifters? Sorry to thread steal, but I'm wondering if they're good for the price.
