Hi, I own a '94 Q45, the car was purchased in Arizona state in 1994. My question is does the Infiniti company build the cooling system diffrent than non AZ state car? The reason for my question is, me and my uncle were looking at my engine and he asked why I have a electric pusher fan on the front of the radiator and a belt driven puller fan on the engine side, I said the electric one is for the trans. But he sayed it was probaly for the extra heat in AZ, and not a trans cooler. I cant find my field manuel, thanks for any help.

The electric fan, I believe, is for the condensor.

ALL 90-96 Q have aux pusher fans. The 90-93 were controlled by AC pressure and higher than normal coolant temp..........90 had single speed, later had multiple speed and 94 was partially ecu controlled to more accurately control the 3 speed fan.

LIke tech said, the ECU triggers the fan on and off (I thought 94 only had 2 speed, unless you consider off a speed ) in the 94-96 models... Theres a simple thermo switch inside the radiator on the older ones...

Most manufacturers use a test facility in Arizona to double check before the model is sold....................brand new is a lot different than old and abused after 6 years.........corrosion and bent fins degrade foam surround.

The engine cannot put out more heat at a fixed rpm idle just that the degraded cooling system cannot get rid of it as well.

A concept that seems difficult for some to fathom.

I haven't seen a modern car WITHOUT an electric pusher fan in front of the AC condenser (lately).

However, a passive trans cooler is imperative on the 90-96 Q, as the trans suffers from insufficient cooling.

I'd bet money that 90% of the 90-96 Q45's on the road have 2 pounds of CRAP between the radiator and condenser that needs to be cleaned out.

Does wonders for the cooling capacity.

I started out with a blow gun and air compressor - Didn't phase it!

A pressure washer finallly did the job, although it also bent some of the fins.

A shop vac with a brush attachment might have also worked.

I can't imagine any way it could have been cleaned without first removing it from the vehicle. You could pressure-wash it from the fan shroud side, but then most of the crud would end up on the back side of the AC condensor - not much improvement in airflow there...

It would seem that any time you replace the belts, antifreeze, hoses and/or water pump, the radiator should also be pulled for cleaning. Fortunately, it's not a difficult job, after the coolant is drained (ETA: and the fan is removed).

If you clean it every year from day one it never get very bad, if you wait 7 years it may be easier and more cost effective -- time vs used performance to just replace it with a new one considering bent fins.

Just another thing to budget replacement when buying a used car.

Well, when it gets that bad, a soaking bath may be required. Pressure wash will bend the fins.

This is a very astute observation especially considering the fact that he SAID that pressure washing bent the fins.

I used a stiff brush taped to a piece of aluminum bar stock .Took time but worked wellsprayed with a garden hose after that , from the back.

I was just confirming his observation. I omitted it initially because I assumed everyone would know how delicate aluminum fins are.

Thank you for reminding me that some people's grasp of the obvious exceeds their reach.
