you need to only worry about the front axles, the rear is a single beam. you need to take out both front hubs and pop the axles out of the transmission. buy yourself a haynes manual, it will help a lot.

I have a haynes but it sucks. This is what I thought, just take out hubs slide axles out? Any seals I need to be aware of that need replacement once the hub is off. Anything vacuum sealed?

Ive done an axle replacement on a 3rd gen and its messy as hell.

You have to:

Jack up car and put on blocks

Remove wheels

Remove front rotors (Makes it easier later)

Tie caliper up out of way (also making it easier later)

Remove axle hub nut

Slide outter axle spline out of hub

Remove shorter half axle

Heres the fun part

The longer half axle will have a set a bolts that mounts axle to chassisthose bolts have to be removed before other half axle will slide out.

With a lil bit of muscle the axles will slide out.

oh, before i forget, be sure to remove a good portion of the transmissonfluid, or it will pour out all over the place.

Once you get all that done just do the reverse for installation.

it can be done in a day with the right tools and a buddy to help.

It seems like a much harder task than it actually is.

I was thinking it was gonna be this uber-difficult task and it wasnt.

Thats the basic premise for it, the haynes manual was a good guide line.

You might wanna try and get your hands on a a Nissan factory Service Manual also, best money i ever spent.

Good luck.

dont pull out both axles off the transmission,at the same time unless you stick something in the differential. the planet gear might collapse then you really have a mess.

I'm assuming the 3rd gens are much different, because you don't have to remove both axles.

Do one at a time. I would suggest having the suspension splitting tool. It looks like a tuning fork. It helps when separating the ball joint for more room.

The axle might slip out easily or it might need a little help via a flat screw driver or other prying device.

Also, plan on getting the car aligned soon after you're done. Playing with the suspension that much makes big changes.

don't use that kind of splitter fork. there is a tool that is for the ball joint. you will damage your ball joint w/ that kind of tool.

anything big enough that is almost the size of the spline so the planetary grear won't collapse, prevention is the key to this. it might not collape but will you take the risk? i won't always do this for a while now i have a shop here in vegas.
