Hey guys(and girls) just thought I'd let u in on an idea I had, tell me what you think of it, ok. The Subaru SVX came with standard AWD and a 230hp NA flat six(Porsche style) now here's my idea, because the Skyline GTR already has AWD, couldn't you just get the RB26DETT engine AND trans. from a GTR hook it up and run with it.....and that would also get rid of the SVX's fatal flaw: it was never offered in manual trans. just an idea, I realize that it wouldn't be a plug-n-play type thing, but do you think it could work well for not a huge amount of money? I'd like your thoughts on this, and since Night is the resident swap expert hopefully I'll get a reply from him, also I'm sry if someone posted something like this before, I searched and couldn't find anything, and also, maybe it could be done with another Subaru, or any car with AWD....like maybe the Mitsubishi Galant VR4, talk about a sleeper..ok, well tell me what you think - possible at a reasonable price? ........AREM :firehead

first off, RB26DETT's cost around $6k, then you gotta worry about installation costs. You'd most likely have to rework the entire driveshaft and bellhousing and whatnot to fit. Plus, the engine may not even fit into the engine bay or sit right. If you've got around $20k to play with then you could give it a try, that's a bare minimum though. Just buy a new car if you're gonna do that.

Word. And infinitely easier to source parts for. And cheaper...etc.

The SVX's engine bay is designed to hold a horizontally-opposed engine, which are flat and short. The RB is a straight-six, tall and long. Even if you could somehow get it to fit under the hood, it will be a nightmare to get the transmission and AWD system hooked up properly. Go for the WRX swap instead.

Anybody know if the SVX was big in japanland? Maybe an MT there? I don't know anything about it.

I heard tell of a sequential 6 speed being put in an SVX, but I can't remember where, now...

It was called the Alycone in Japan, and was not really a hot seller over there, either, for nearly the same reasons as the U.S. (no manual transmission!). JDM versions did have a more sophisticated AWD and AWS (four-wheel steering) system than USDM models, plus different interior trim and more esoteric gadgetry like folding mirrors, adjustable headlights, etc.

There wasn't a manual or semi-manual option available for the Alcyone/SVX. However, many owners are now swapping in the WRX six-speed, which evidently fits up to the engine/chassis with a few modifications.

The Alcyone is a neat car, but has some intrinsic mechanical flaws and really needs to have been well cared for, otherwise they are money pits.

It's a swap. The 5-speed gearbox from the regular Impreza is also a popular choice.

Addenda...there are now many converted manual-transmission Alcyones on the road, primarily because the original auto transmissions were one of the aforementioned flaws. They suffered from poor cooling problems and were often toasted quite early in the car's life. Rather than drop a grand on rebuilding a transmission that was sapping the car's performance, and unreliable to boot, most owners wisely chose just to substitute a cheap 5-speed from a junkyard.

Not only was the auto transmission one of its flaws, but the brakes were too. the car is HEAVY and the 4 wheel disc brakes just dont cut it. the biggest problem was the fact that they warped sooo fast cause they were too small. imagine the 240sx brakes on a Q or J30. just not the right size. they are neat looking cars and i have seen a few around my town, which really surprised me.

Plus they each use different types of AWD systems.

hey what about putting a RB26DETT into a Frontier, RWD only using a RB25 transmission? it'd make a good drift vehicle, RWD & very nose heavy.
