I don't know if 'pimp' was the best choice of wording to use here. The last person that called my car 'pimp' was a kid not even of driving age yet and usually the kind that simply can't afford the real stuff.
If you're on a budget and are a car freak (like me), you're just itching to do anything to the car you possibly can to get away from the mundain factory appearence. The cheapest and most effective exterior visual change would be to drop it by getting a nice set of aftermarket coils. If that's too expensive, there's always cutting, which is NOT recommended, but some prefer the "look" over function. Next step for the exterior and the most effective visual tranformation is rims. I say rims, because if you're budget minded you can keep your existing tires and find some attractive aftermarket rims to use. But if you're patient and save the dough, you can now custom fit a set of rims and tires to fit the lowered stance. Beyond that, you could always start adding to the body (rear wing, skirts, valances, stickers, etc. ... the list goes on). There's a lot of bolt-on body parts you can find second-hand for cheap. If you can afford new, go for it! Just try your best not to make it look too much like a mod-a-Honda.
For the drivetrain, you can start with the simple cold air intake and muffler upgrades. Or you can save your money and piece together an entire performance package such as motor swapping or building the existing in preparation for a wicked all-motor or turbo upgrade. Nothing is better than planning for what you REALLY want to do, instead of blowing money on nonsense along the way. I've seen plenty (we all have) of cars with literally thousands of dollars in bolt-on parts and tacky discount auto shop add-ons. I've been around these same people at car shows and street gatherings and always hear the lip, yet there's nothing for strip. When they look at cars heavily modified for speed (not unlike mine), they wonder why they can't have something like that. I tell them two words, "Patience" and "Save". Now if you're happy with all that crap, good for you, and nobody should tell you otherwise.
For the interior, well, anything goes too. Steering wheel, shifter knob, boot, gages, seats (replace or recover), harnesses, lighting color change, can of colored vinyl/plastic spray ... you name it. Choice is yours, and it's your preference whether to be the pimp or play the part.
Here's what I wouldn't do: add things that scream performance, but have nothing to back it. Kinda like those Honda boys that the first mod they do is add a HUGE tachometer on the dash, or even the inevidible 'fart-can' muffler upgrade ... oh crap, I love that one; keeps me up at night! I say it's better to fit the part than to look it. I don't have all the answers and I hope some of this helps. But if you're true to the Pimp-My-Ride campaign, well sorry ... I can't help you.
