I bet I'm one of the first ones to play classical music loudly (>-22 ) on my Versa SL head unit with an MP3 player hooked up via the auxillary port. If any others have, chances are they too have heard the loud humming that eventually leads to hysteria in music aficionados.

Well, I've discovered the source. Quickly realizing that the humming is not alternator related (I'm using batteries), it appears to only occurr when operating the headlamps. Honing in a little more, the hum disappears when the dash lights are fully dimmed or fully on (past the notch on the knob).

It appears that the dimmer regulator induces hum in the auxillary input. I'm glad the hum is gone (with the right settings) but a little miffed that I had to buy 2 cables to figure this one out!

BTW, does anyone have a plan as to how to get better volume out of this system without replacing the head unit or buying the RF sub?

Hummed out.

Never had the problem, on my trip from Phoenix to San Diego I used my iPOD and never had a 'hum' sound come from the stereo. Infact I foundout that the music plays LOUDER coming form the iPOD...

It could be that I'm on batteries. The following caused hum whether or not my players was plugged in.

Try turning on your headlights with your dash dimmers to a midway point. Plug your 3mm cable into the auxillary port while leaving the opposite plug loose. With the power on, turn the stereo to -20 or higher. If you don't hear a distinct hum, there must be something wrong with my system.

How do you hook-up an Ipod to the aux input? Did you buy a special cable?

you need a cable that has audio jack on both sides (same size as your headphones) ans just connect ipod with it. Mine came with the mp3 player i bought a couple years ago, i never knew what it was for til i ve seen the versa audio setup.
