Since I am the chief of workers for the KCRSCCA, I wrote up a little script on what to tell all the noobs, and to remind everyone else (mainly cause I can never remember what to say). So If you have never autox'ed, this might be a good read on what to / not to do whilst working course during an autoX. If any one has any input I would appreciate it, I have already laminated a copy, but i can always redo it.
Here's to keeping safe:
Radio Calls: Pause one sec and hold radio at least two inches from your mouth. Call out: Worker station, Car Number & class, Car make / model / and color if no class / number is available, or can’t be seen. Number and class is preferred.
Cones Down: For cones knocked over, hold cone up so that the radio person knows the cone was killed, give “safe” sign for cones that are ok. If any part the cone is in the box and upright, it is safe; if the cone is knocked over in or out of the box it is a penalty; If a cone is flipped up in the air and lands right side in the box, it is okay, pointer cones don’t count. Reset all cones as fast as possible to avoid a red flag situation.
RUN don’t walk to reset cones
Keep red flags unfurled, NOT rolled up, AT ALL TIMES. When in doubt if there is a safety concern on the course, red flag the car in question. All cars on course will get a re-run.
Safety is our primary concern, so error on the side of caution. For example, if a car spins out and hasn't returned to the course soon enough to allow the next car to safely run, use the red flag. If a car goes off course or gets 'lost' on course, compromising worker or driver safety, red flag the car. Always keep an eye out for other workers.
If you red flag a car, immediately announce this on the radio. RUN towards the car you flagged, but stay out from its line of travel. Only get as close as you SAFELY can. The Starter will hold the start until the red flag condition is cleared.
The worker that called the red flag will verify on the radio when it is safe to proceed. Once this is confirmed by workers holding the cars on course, advise drivers to proceed at normal speed, and spaced appropriately.
Who ever has the radio, should also carry the red flag. Unless there are less than a total of 3 workers, the radio person should not reset cones. The radio person should watch the workers resetting the cones to see if there is a cone down or not.
Make sure you are spread out over the course, not clumped up together.
DNF’s: if a car goes off course and does not return where it left the course, or before where it left the course, or goes on the wrong side of a pointer / non-optional slalom, call in DNF in the same way you call in a hit cone.
Never turn your back to a car, watch behind the car for wiggling cones, they are much easier to see that way. Always be mindful of where you are standing in relation to where a car may spin into. Always keep an eye out for other course workers, if you see something that some one else doesn’t, YOU need to act.
